Ok I wanted to open the fixed file to compare but I am getting this error.
I would like to fix this in inkscape if I can. I ungroup but I am still not able to select the lines to delete them. If you could help me with that process it would be awesome.

Great info David. In your red text I am trying to see what the node looks like when not joined and when it is joined. What is the difference. It is hard to tell by the screen shot.
