You have downloaded the 3D version. I am using the 2D Drafting version, which makes it very simple to save as dxf without doing all the additional steps that Mo shows. For simple drafting, I don't need the full 3D version. For 3D - I use Fusion 360.

If you want to install the 2D drafting version, you will need to uninstall the 3D version first. Then go to this link to download the 2D version.

I have not tried importing a dxf file to Solid Edge 2D yet. I will check it out.

2 maybe 3 clicks when done in draft, no need to extrude... but i still suggest installing 3D if you plan to learn/use modeling in the future, to each his own

Just to show how to do it, I took cues from your picture.

Mo - I am able to import a dxf created with another program into Solid Edge 2D. My question is: Once I have this dxf file open, how do I import a second dxf file into the same drawing?
Thanks,
David

ROKCRLER wrote: Sun Aug 25, 2024 12:37 pm Good to see folks using SolidEdge :Yay

Mo - my recent renewed interest in Solid Edge 2D was initiated by someone at the Inkscape group wanting to know if anyone was using Inkscape for drawing blueprints. So no 3D or solid modeling, only 2D drawings. I suggested that they might have better luck using Solid Edge 2D instead of Inkscape. I went ahead and downloaded it myself just to check it out again.

It looks like it will do what they want for creating these drawings. I have been messing around with it a bit, and so far I see no way to import a dxf file to an existing Solid Edge 2D Drafting 2024 - 2D Model. This is quick and easy to do with Design Edge, Inkscape, LightBurn, etc. What am I missing?

The only way I have been able to do it is to use Solid Edge 2D to create two separate drawing files, export each one as dxf, import them to another cad program - then export as a single dxf file and import it back into Solid Edge 2D.

There must be a better method. Please advise.

Thanks,

David

By the way, I did discover that I can also achieve the same result by importing a dxf into a new drawing - and then copy/paste from the new drawing to the current drawing. So this is a quicker method to combine two dxf files into the same drawing than my first method. Now I would like to know if there is a quicker method to import a dxf directly into an existing drawing without using the copy/paste sequence.

Thanks,
David

David I think what you are saying is how I did it with other programs was to have 2 separate openings of the same program. And then having the drawings open in each that you want to combine, using copy/paste from one to the other. So one opening now has both drawing in one.

Yes Tom - that is what I am saying. I am trying to figure out if it is possible to simply import a dxf to an existing drawing file without going thru those additional steps of having two drawings open and using copy/paste. Most all of the other cad programs I use allow direct import of dxf into an open file. I am disappointed if Solid Edge 2D does not offer this capability. Hopefully Mo will know the answer.

In the draft mode, you can simply drag and drop dxf files from your pc in to the draft, no need to copy and paste.

Mo - thanks for that!! I think I tried copy and paste, but never even considered drag and drop. I found some online information that talks about this and related topics in more detail.

I've also been playing around with the Free Sketch tool using an imported jpeg of the OP's part photo he showed previously. I don't know what the exact scale is for his part, but this just gives an example of what can be done.
Lots of fun to be had here!!

Here is what the final design came out as and what they were for:

Image

Image

The original part design kept snapping as the clamp jaw (the one on the left side in the picture of the clamp) was originally thinner. I added 1/4" to it. So, for scale, that side of the jaw is 1" across now.
Gotta work on getting him a price for these now. Was doing it for a friend of mine.

Those look nice! What cad program did you end up using to create your modified drawing?

I used Vcarve for the initial drawing, but the modifications were done in Inkscape. I tried using Solid Edge 2D, but couldn't figure out how to move or alter lines.

I did have an interesting problem pop up... the Linux version of Inkscape on my plasma table PC kept adding extra lines to the drawing that weren't there in the one I did on my Windows PC. Loading up the Windows drawing in Sheetcam loaded up a perfect part, but the Linux parts kept having issues.

I did finally fix it though. It was just really odd.

Post your before and after vector files (dxf or svg) and I will try to show you how to move/alter lines.

I have sent you a PM.

Awesome - here is a book that may be helpful to you for learning more about using Solid Edge 2D.

I did a comparison of Solid Edge 2D vs. QCad Pro using a simple drawing example. Here is the link.
