New Cyrious table with CommandCNC

I bought a fire-damaged Cyrious 4x4 plasma table at an incredible discount. The man who sold it to me basically gave it to me. I've been looking for a table for a few years, but as a welding instructor, funds are limited so buying a new table was not an option.

The day I brought it home


The Feathertouch case was melted. Spoiler alert, the FT-02 actually still works and has nothing wrong with it


After reorganizing my shop and getting everything fixed and set up, I'm up and running. Ignore my workbench, I'm still working on organizing everything


I had to rewire nearly everything on the gantry, as burning wood fell on it and melted all the cables. I can't afford a Hypertherm power source yet, so I adapted the Duramax machine torch it came with to work with my machine. I had to buy a new PC and a new PWMIIA module. The melted monitor that came with the table still works, lol. Dalton at Cyrious Metal Works was extremely helpful for several weeks while I was diagnosing and fixing issues that kept popping up.
I am really enjoying the CommandCNC interface, after having used Mach3 and a Starfire controller in the past. In fact, I'm strongly considering asking the CommandCNC guys to help me upgrade my machine at work to a full CommandCNC control package, as the Starfire controller it uses is garbage.

Anyway, hello. I intend to start making some side money with this machine once I finish getting all of the bugs worked out.

Total is about $2000 or so, I think. Certainly under $2200.

45amps, 95ipm, 118v, 1.0s delay. 10ga sheet steel.
Had issues with the smaller letters but ended up getting them all cut out anyway thanks to the CommandCNC point-and-click start-from-line interface. Easiest crash recovery I've ever dealt with.

Now I'm just struggling with Inkscape. I have a few years of experience using Vcarve so I really wish I had a personal license for it. Vcarve is so much easier than anything else. Trying to design some signs and grills to get started.

Will update once I get some more stuff cut.

I think your sign turned out great! As far as drawing goes, you should be able to do just about anything with Inkscape that you can/could do with VCarve Pro. If you run into any particular problems or have specific questions about drawing with Inkscape, let us know and we will try to help you.

The real strength of V carve Is not in plasma cutting. Its designed to be a quasi-3D carving program for router tables. While it will do 2D cuts its overkill for that and their CUT2D is a better fit BUT it lacks tools and Post for doing avoidance plasma cutting.
We offer a POST for Vcarve for router including one for a tool change . it Wil not work for plasma. We have looked at writing a tool set and POST for CUT2D but their POST is just a script file so it means doing development into the application using their API and adding in variables that could be passed to the POST . it nice software and the biggest plus its it 3D simulation that lets you see exactly how the piece will cut and with each tool.

Vectric apps are all draw and cut meanin they have vector drawing tools built in . I still prefer to draw in Inkscpae and then import the SVG or PDF inot Vectric and edit it there and then do the CAM part .

My favorite parts of Vcarve are being able to add fillets with a single click, resizing shapes with extreme accuracy, modifying curves, easily adding tabs to parts and being able to create shapes just by typing in the size you want it to be.
Inkscape does most of that but it's not nearly as intuitive. For instance, you have to guess what size your fillet will be and it takes a lot more clicks to get something filleted. It took me a lot of googling just to figure out how to do it.

Anyway, enough griping.

It finally cooled off enough for me to get out in the shop again. I'm building a skid plate for a Jeep of mine, so here's a picture of one of the parts after I cut it out:



Super clean cuts. I haven't touched that part but the edges have very little dross.

Thanks for the tip. That's similar to Fusion (which I never really figured out how to use) but it's more user-friendly. Interesting program. I might take the time to learn how to use it. I don't see a .dxf file option though, strange.

It's interesting how the dxf from Solid Edge 2D imports to various cad programs. In some cases, it imports with no dimensions showing - which is what I would expect. In other cases, the dimensions import along with the parts in the drawing.

I added more detail to one of the parts to the skid plate I'm building.





My wife is going to love it. Her Jeep is a custom metallic purple and she calls it the "purple people eater."

I am running the 20204 version on a Windows 10 computer. When I click on the red "X" in the upper right hand corner, it takes about 3-4 seconds for the program to close.

I don't think that is true. I don't remember if they asked for a company name when I downloaded it. If they do, then just put in any name you want - "Tom's Custom Metal Works", or ............
I just checked and I did put in Desert Hybrids Precision. I expect I could have put in any company name as I did this in the middle of the night and it gave me the download file right then. So I doubt they did any verification. I probably could just as well have put in "Dave's Hot Rod Shop".

First try failed to complete, second did ok lots to learn like Fusion 360, for what I do TurboCad will work fine. Thanks for the link and info about Solid Edge.

Good to see folks using SolidEdge

I would recommend installing the community edition which has both 3d and 2d.Only reason being when you install the 2d then want to install 3d you'll have to uninstall 2d as its included in 3d.

The one for Makers requires company info where the community edition does not. I made the mistake of installing the Makers version and siemens kept contacting me for company info.

David, the dimension thing is odd, ive never seen it do that, i dont think i have mine setup to display dimensions (PMI) like that... i'll look later and see.

I can exit the program now (it may have been because I needed a system restart?) but I still can't save .dxf files. Also need to figure out how to edit parts, but that can come later. I need to make adjustments to the part in the picture. It's my first paid job with this table.

This is the "Save As" dialogue:

Extrude the part, then you can save as flat.

Select the face you want to extrude, pull the arrow in the direction you want to extrude and ender a thickness
Then you can save as flat, select the face then select the endpoint you want 0,0 to be, then select save as dxf.
