Fine cut consumables question for Mr.Colt.
Jim. I was just thinking how nice it would be to have shielded fine cut parts. Any possibility of that in the future?

Re: Fine cut consumables question for Mr.Colt.
One of the important features of the Finecut nozzle design is the ability to keep cut edges as close to square as possible. To do this you need high energy density and low arc voltage. To get low arc voltage the nozzle orifice needs to be very close to the material......adding a shield forces the nozzle orifice to be further away from the material, increasing arc voltage.
While I am not ruling it out, currently there is not technology that allows the same quality as Finecut consumables in a shielded version. I doubt that we will see any shielded Finecut technology in the near future.

Re: Fine cut consumables question for Mr.Colt.
i use the finecut ohmic shield any time we have finecut consumables on the table
it is barely a shield but will save the finecut tip from rubbing or crashing into the material
we do a lot of non traditional cutting on our cnc table, mostly on 2.5'' ss tube held in a fixture

That is the correct "shield" to use with the finecut parts as it extends slightly below the nozzle.....protecting it from dounle arcing to the plate. Officially though......shield technology covers the nozzle completely...as it does with the higher powered consumables on Hypertherm systems.

I've been using the non shielded deflector (part # 220955) with finecut. Can I use this ohmic shield (part # 220948) even if I don't have ohmic sensing on my table?

Me to book shows the 220948 mounting with the retaining cap for the ohmic sensing.

I use 220948 without ohmic sensing. I feel like I have more protection using it.

Re: Fine cut consumables question for Mr.Colt.
In my opinion (which is sometimes different than our product managers) the only part to use with the Finecut consumables is the 220948 shield....for hand and machine cutting, with or without ohmic contact.
Reasons:
- extends slightly below the nozzle
-Eliminates arcing between nozzle and plate
-Improves nozzle life
-If you have ohmic contact...you must use this one.
-Cools the nozzle better
-If height control drives torch in the plate...generally no damage occurs.
