Refrigerated Air Dryer from Harbor Freight

Post by plain ol Bill »

I got a refrigerated dryer from Horrible Freight (Harbor Freight) and have been very pleased with it. I have an in line Motor Guard filter but I don't really think it was needed. I do have an automatic unloader on my air compressor that drains moisture from the bottom of the tank each time the compressor kicks on and this helps keep the air drier.

I've had a HF $300 refridgerated air dryer for about 5 years and can say that I've had zero issues with it. It is identical to a $1800 dryer that a local welding company sells in their store under another name.

I have heard they work pretty good.

I thought about getting one myself for a while.

I used my home made dryer the last few days under some heavy cutting time and it did a great job.

I checked it on a regular basis just to make sure it was doing what it was made for and I am very happy with it.

I just keep some water bottles and soda cans in it to help keep the box cold (and to keep from getting thirsty).

It has been really humid here the last few weeks and it has pulled a lot of water out of the air.

I am sure yours works better if you were to rate the two under heavy production, I am not sure.

I was given a dorm size refer and thought it would use it for air drying also.

I am happy your unit is working for you. Tools and equipment are so expensive and I have found that working for yourself means stretching every dollar to keep in production.

I too have found my consumables to be lasting longer. Those things can be costly and I have also found the cuts to be better with the dryer air.

It pays in the long run to either buy an air dryer or build one.

If you're not opposed to buying used it can pay off to watch Craigslist or ebay. I was just getting ready to get the Harbor Freight unit when I found a 100 CFM Ingersoll Rand on ebay that was close to me and got it for $76 in great shape. It's about 5 times as big as what I need right now but I plan to set up a big sandblaster soon so it will be good to have the extra size.

Just thought I'd chime in. I ordered one of the HF refrigerated dryers on new years day with a coupon that let me grab it for $300. (reg price is now $400)

I got it yesterday and it works fantastically, out of the box! I'll post back here periodically for updates about how it is holding up.

Well, after several years my dryer is still running strong. Haven't had the need to recharge once, and am still getting dry air.

When I went to Arclight for training on my table they were using a HF dryer on their table and recommended it highly. I've been using mine for just over a year and it works great. Can't beat it for the money.

I am also on the bandwagon for the HF Dryer. Mine has been running for 2 years now and no problems.

On my third one but that was from shipping damage, But what I did to make it virtually silent was remove the compressor bolts and stop the transmit of noise I also used double sided stick foam at all the sheet metal seams, works great.
Question do you leave yours plugged in and on all the time?
Thanks
