A while back I bought the Duramax upgrade machine torch for my Pcam table.
Now that I have upgraded my Hyper 1250 plasma torch from the T-80 torch to the Duramax machine torch, I was left with a pile of tips for the T-80 hand torch. I want the 80 amp tips - good for hand cutting some object.
But I have about 2 dozen new tips besides the 80's, mostly Finecut tips for the T-80.
The Duramax machine torch is just great, but I hate to toss out new tips. So I fired up the caliper, and started to measure things. I figured out that the only difference physically was the hole in the Duramax shield that the tip goes through was 10 thou smaller than the older shield #120929.
So I did what any self-respecting machinist would do, I threw a spare shield into the lathe and cut out that pesky 10 thou. Now the old T-80 tips fit into the new Duramax torch.
But can she cut? I cut 500 inches on one old type Finecut today and it looks untouched, and the only thing I noticed you had to raise the cutting speed at least 10 inches. It lit and cut very nicely.
The Duramax and the T-80 Finecuts are pictured for comparison. I will stay with the Duramax tips when I use these up, there is no price advantage, but little downside to modifying a torch shield.
Sorry in advance, Jim Colt, I know it's probably not perfect, but it works.
