Looking for some sign mounting tips.
Making a sign thats 7 seperate letters and a logo, the customer wants them mounted about 1.5" off the wall, its drywall , whats the best/easiest way to make that happen?

Re: Looking for some sign mounting tips.
Will this be a permanent mounting or does the customer want them removable? For semi-permanent, I would think that drywall anchors would work. Then attach your standoffs or whatever to the anchors.

Re: Looking for some sign mounting tips.
How big are the pieces? If they're not too heavy, some kind of 3M tape might work. You would have to make standoffs of some sort.

Re: Looking for some sign mounting tips.
Spot weld small metal brackets to the rear of the letters. Illustration is NOT drawn to proportion. Concept Drawing ONLY.
INSURE that metal brackets for each letter or shape can support the weight without bending down!
Position brackets so they CANNOT be seen looking straight at the sign. Letters 1-1/2" off of the wall means the brackets WILL be seen when looking at the letters from an angle. Paint the brackets the same color as the wall to make them less obvious.
Lay out the letters and LOGO on a large sheet of paper (white paper or butcher paper, etc.) Align the entire design on the paper.
Mark the top center radius of each bracket slot on the paper.
Tape paper to wall LEVEL. Poke though paper to mark spots on wall.
Use small machine thread drywall anchors. Put anchors through drywall, pinch down anchors on rear side.
Back threaded screws out a bit, hang the letters and retighten them.
Avoid wall studs if possible. Use a wood screw in place of any anchor that hits a wall stud.

Drywall would be a but if a tough on with it being raised off 1.5". Joe's idea above seems like a good solution.

You can either make the brackets out of thicker metal and weld them to the rear of the letters, or make them out of thinner metal, and give them some side flanges to resist bending down under the weight of the metal they support.

Re: Looking for some sign mounting tips.
OR you could just BUY curtain rod brackets and modify them to suit your needs. These brackets allow you to ADJUST the distance from the wall. They will also allow you to compensate for a wall that is not completely FLAT or perfectly vertical. Cut off the hook end below the screw, bend the remaining tab to 90 degrees, tack weld it to the rear of the letter, OR use something like FAST DRY JB WELD COMPOUND if you do not want to weld them, or you have already painted or powder coated them, or chrome plated them, and welding is no longer an option.
Make sure the JB WELD COMPOUND is on the METAL LOAD, and not only bonded to a coat of paint or something that can flake off of the load under the weight.
DO NOT cut off the metal below the key slot. this will INCREASE the leverage the letter has to pull the anchor out of the wall, and you do not want that.
WARNING! Before QUOTING this job, count the number of brackets you will need. These brackets are NOT CHEAP! and JB WELD COMPOUND is 'SPENSIVE, LUCY!

Re: Looking for some sign mounting tips.
Adhesive tape ONLY works when the load is flush with the wall, and you use a LOT of adhesive tape. Brackets that hold the load AWAY FROM the wall create LEVERAGE, and as the tape heats up and succumbs to humidity and such, the letters WILL fall off of the wall.

Re: Looking for some sign mounting tips.
See my first question? If the letters are a couple of inches tall, then I don't see why tape wouldn't work. Especially if they are aluminum. A lot of missing details...Joe Jones wrote: ↑Fri May 06, 2022 2:20 pmAdhesive tape ONLY works when the load is flush with the wall, and you use a LOT of adhesive tape. Re: Looking for some sign mounting tips.
Lettering this 2 inches tall would be not be mounted an inch and a half off of the wall surface.
Jeep guy, tell us a little more about your project. I am assuming that you are going to create letters and a logo that mount on a wall, such as behind a receptionist desk, or outside along the wall as you walk into an entry or perhaps in a lobby. I am guessing that the letters are between nine and 12 inches tall and the logo is probably 18 to 24 inches in diameter. How far off am I?

I absolutely HATE sheetrock! It is cheap to install, and easy to repair, but a total PITA to work with. When I finish off the four guest bedroom suites on the second floor of the Frankenbarn, the walls will all be 1/2" quality grade plywood with some durable exterior surface applied.

Re: Looking for some sign mounting tips.
A little bit off the original topic, but for mounting very light weight pictures on interior walls perhaps these could be 3D printed. Just a thought.
