Mk3 Diy breakaway torch mount
Had to go a little bigger for the new Duramax torch so had a rethink.
Easy enough to make up, you just need 3 x 12mm bearings and 2 magnets (I cut one in half)
Bearings tig welded in, magnets stuck with double sided tape.
Torch clamps I used 10mm and 5mm for the plates.
I can post detailed info & dxf if anyone wan'ts them.

Thanks Sean,
I think I'll be using this principle when I make my breakaway. Cheap, easy and looks effective.
Who needs to pay $300 for a breakaway.
Keith.

Looks like the old "KISS" process still works, very nice I'm sure it will be copied.
Are you going to put a disconnect switch with it?

It's about time I did, I've had 2 leaks in the tray due to knocked off torch using previous designacourtjester wrote:Looks like the old "KISS" process still works, very nice I'm sure it will be copied.

Yes it works really well, better with the bigger bearings, took a bit of playing around with getting right hole size and magnet position, I'll edit post with details soon.

Those clamps cut out very nice, & the whole package is sweet.

Re: Mk3 Diy breakaway torch mount
Looks great. I'm looking at upgrading my table, it uses a set of ball bearings to run on the plate and a pneumatic ram to lift the torch.
I'd like to change it to something like yours, with THC. Just not sure what to go for at the moment.
I've had a couple of torch collisions over the years, really like your idea.
Will.

Re: Mk3 Diy breakaway torch mount
I accidently found a youtube video of shapes you make using magnetic balls. It may take some experimenting with placement, but that would knock out 2 birds with one stone. I don't have a torch set up yet, since I am in the planning stages.
I could make this my first cut, but if something goes wrong during setup...
Would anyone mind selling me the metal cut outs?

I'll go with the square magnets like you did. Do you mind telling us the size and strength of the magnets? There are all kinds of strengths.

Re: Mk3 Diy breakaway torch mount
Nice design,
You could add tabs to the torch mounting piece to hold some alignment lasers as well. The ones on fleebay require a 1/2" hole.

Re: Mk3 Diy breakaway torch mount
Have a look on that drawing Greg, the magnets I used are 19x 29 with one cut in half for the top two, been using it for a while now and it's spot on, very easy to lift off and re-locate, just the right hold.
Na don't bother with the mag balls, be a right pain welding those on!
