PLasmaCam Files

Post by wellerparts »

I have a friend who owns a plasmaCam table and wants to upgrade to a different brand. (actually they are/have built their own). But they are telling me that all the parts they designed on the plasmacam machine will not import into any other program. This seemed really odd to me. Does PlasmaCam not use std .dxf files?
If not, is there a utility to convert the Plasmacam files to something readable by other software programs?

Just trying to help a buddy out, I don't have a dog in this fight! I hate to see him waste his investment!

Thanks !!

I don't own a Plasma cam (so others might chime in here) but I've HEARD that they changed something in their software (presumably because of bootleggers) so that their files are only readable by their software, and you don't get the software without buying their equipment. Sneaky. So my buddy designing something on their system, cannot send it to me so i can cut it.

plasma cam saves files as a .pcm file.....their own type of file.....But you can if you have the capability on your plasmacam software(newer versions it is an extra 1000.00 to do this so I hear.) export the pcm as a dxf

You cannot "save" a file as .dxf in PlasmaCam but you can "export" to .dxf. If you are using the DesignEdge software you have to have the option enabled (by purchasing the $1000.00 upgrade) to export to .dxf.

You can export to a dxf file. Open the file and use export instead of save. If you use save, them it will save the file as a .pcm file. You can export to dxf or g-code. I have one of the newer vesions of the basic software, not design edge or any expensive upgrade. Pcam will send you the newest disc (as long as you still own the machine) for $10.
