Trouble filling object

I cant figure out how to fill this , and I have the corel book . What I want is the letters and the flame coming out of the torch bright red and the torch black . When I try fill it will only fill in between the letters ?

I cant even get it to open in Corel. Format is unsupported

ungroup all, zoom in with the pick tool, and you can see the top letters don't look right

select just the top letters and it says 1 object with 3 sub-objects, there's two copies of the outer letter outline,

break-apart, delete one of the outlines, select all, combine, join curves

object has open and closed paths so it won't fill right

break-apart, deselect all the open interior paths, combine, fill with desired color

select leftover open interior paths, combine, no fill, (outline white)

1 shape = 1 color, to have multiple colors, object has to be divided into multiple shapes (or use a gradient as shown)

I m having trouble viewing the downloaded file in corel draw , I imported and tryed to open it , when I back out the previewer will show it , but when I click on it I only get a grey screen ? Also can anyone recommend a free j peg resizer that wont screw up my new computer ?
