Need help
Can anyone help me draw one of these and save to dxf file? It is 36 x 4 in ruler marked at each inch with numbers over the inch marks. Was trying to finish a project for a customer and having problems with my software.

Re: Need help
Are you planning to engrave the numbers and lines and cnc plasma cut the outer perimeter? What software are you using that you are having problems with?

Using CNC router into foam, it is V-carve software. I surely appreciate the quick response and any help.

Re: Need help
VCarve Pro? I assume this will be for display purposes, as a foam ruler may not hold up all that well.

Re: Need help
What do you mean that your VCarve Pro is not working properly? You will need it to create the cut paths for your router, so if it will work for that it will work for drawing simple shapes like rectangles, lines, and typing numbers.
You can use the rectangle tool to draw the rectangle, draw line tool to draw some lines, the offset tool to offset the inch marks, and then your text tool to draw the numbers.
Here is a screen shot to get you started. I'm using Aspire, but it is the same as VCarve pro as far as 2D work. Go ahead and try to draw this using these tools and let us know if you get stuck or have specific questions about using the program to draw.
It would be easy enough for someone to do this for you, but you will never learn to do it for yourself if you don't try.

Re: Need help
This isn't an exact match to your sample.
Here are some fishing rulers in 4" increments I created. Designed in a bunch of different ways to suit your method of printing, routing or cutting. Each ruler is 4" by 38".
I use LightBurn software. With their snap grid, create array and easy use it would take less than 3 minutes to design one of these from scratch.

Re: Need help
Nice work Jim. I know it's fun to draw this stuff, and many of us get in the habit of simply providing a file to an OP - myself included. I too could have very easily and quickly drawn this up for the OP. He has asked many times in the past for someone to draw him a file, and often says he his having trouble with his software and needs it in a hurry.
My feeling was/is that it would be better for him to learn to do some of this for himself, or at least make some attempt at drawing it and then ask questions. He says he is using VCarve Pro - which has some very simple and easy to use drawing tools. I showed a screen shot with some information about how he could get started to draw this for himself.
I know that many of these guys fail to read the forum rules about asking for help with file conversions. Rule #2 in particular.

Re: Need help
Thank you so much Jim, I do greatly appreciate it. I do not know what is going on with my software, it's not that I don't know how to use my software, as I said my software isn't working correctly, I can set tool paths and cut and rout my shapes but for some reason in my drawings it is not allowing me to create as I have for years and I am trying to finish this last piece. I had been on with tech trying to get this glitch in my software worked out for hours and thought I'd reach out for help to finish this for the customer. I know this is a simple shape, but without the tool working I scrambled for help. Again, I do greatly appreciate the help and my you and Dave both have a blessed day.

Re: Need help
Sometimes it is better to have more then one software package to do your work, OP case in point. Many here do use different programs to generate the designs. Here are 2 tutorial to show how to draw rulers in Inkscape to learn another way.

Now that you have successfully competed your drawing, perhaps consider sharing it for the benefit of others who may be looking for a similar file.
There is a specific file sharing section here.

Re: Need help
So after you make your statement about helping someone out you say this about sharing? The difference in you and me I most definitely will rather then saying no they should learn how to draw , I would be most grateful to share sir. Have a blessed day.

I think you have misunderstood what was said, He has done a lot of tutorial posts here to help many others to learn. I believe his statement was a step to trigger you to learn so you could complete projects quicker then waiting for answers posted here.

Kreaves - you have been the beneficiary of help from other members in the past with such items as your Welcome Guitar, Johnell Memorial, and Pine City Outdoors where you had asked for help and other members graciously obliged by providing you with cut ready files from your posted images.
I am simply suggesting that you might return the favor and perhaps give back to the community by sharing your completed file that you drew yourself.
If you need help leaning to use your drawing software, there are many members here (including myself) ready and willing to help you and offer advise.
If you are looking to pay someone to create files for you, then perhaps consider contacting one of the following members.

Re: Need help
Yes Tom - you are correct - sometimes folks just need a little bit of encouragement to learn to do some of this for themselves. I agree - there are other options such as Inkscape (free drawing program) that are easy to use and could be used as an alternative tool in case the primary drawing software is having problems.acourtjester wrote: Fri Feb 14, 2025 10:51 pm I think you have misunderstood what was said, He has done a lot of tutorial posts here to help many others to learn. Re: Need help
No where in my post did it say I didn't know how to use the program only that my software wasn't working correctly, I've been drawing for years and yes I have reached out before in the past and only one other time has it been due to software issues. I know how to draw shapes, text, explode the text, group, un-group, extend, trim, trace files, offset items, array, polar array, all of the above, i merely ask for help with one of the simplest and get labeled as someone that doesn't know how and needs to be taught like i was not telling the truth about my software, had no reason to lie, but yes you definitely did teach me something, thank you David after your comments I set down in just a few minutes and learned all the above so now I can maybe fish and eat.
