In line filters?

Post by 3DM »

Has anyone found a good filtration solution with all the different home-built water management solutions?

I am ball valve dumping directly into my 15 gl holding tank under the table. Then using a transfer pump with a pickup tube about 4" off the bottom of the tank. The goal is to let the solids stay on the bottom of the tank vrs getting pumped back up to the table.

On my older CNC lathe, I have a basic home inline water filter to filter the coolant from the sump as it's pumped back up for use. It works like a charm and removes the fines from the coolant. I am thinking about this, but thinking the volume of solids in the plasma water might just clog the filters faster than I care to change.

Option B is to just let it run as is and let the solids settle to the bottom of the holding tank and flush the thing out when the sediment is almost to the pick up tube for the pump. Then spend the time messing with filters, making parts i.e. $.

Is anyone using some filter in their system besides a screen when they dump?

If you are using a plastic drum why not attach magnets to the outside bottom to hold the metal debris there?

When I built the 2x2 I put a Pee Trap in the water line to/from the tank. I have had very little dross appear in the system:

I use compressed air to fill the water tray:

@acourtjester a magnet would help with larger particles, but they would have to float by the magnet for it to get them. But it would get some for sure.

@SegoMan DeSigns nice use of a keg for sure. I thought about using PSI to move the coolant but went with a $40 transfer pump so I could use standard hose fittings. Since I already have 110v at the table, it is simpler for my application.

I have also considered dumping the table into a larger "bin" for a settling pond. Then, transfer the top layer of water over to the holding tank using the already-in-place and wired-up pump. This would let me easily take the bin after transferring it to rinse out the sediment. The holding tank can be removed, its just cumbersome and only has a 3" opening at the top.

3DM,

They make a water cyclonic separator, it is basically the same as the ones for dust collection system. Do some image searching for them then build your own and save $$. Fines could be pulled out with a giant spa / swimming pool type filter. I looked into this system on the 6x12 build as it was going to be in the $100/s for rust additive and I wanted to prolong water changes. I then found out I can treat 350 gal of water with laundry soda for $15 and discarded the idea.

I had a 240V 3 Ph / 3 hp (never been used) spa pump donated to my 6 x 12 build. My 105 requires 3 ph as well so it was wired to the table, I run a 12v controlled contractor to turn it on/off so I have no high voltage to my control panel. I use cam & groove couplers for quick disconnect.

@Sergo wow that is some power for a pump right there. Interesting idea on the cyclone filter and using a pool filter. I am in the PNW so not allot of pools around so using a pool filter never came in mind. I would think those would not be too costly. I like it.
