Evolution S355MCS 14" Mitering Chop Saw

Post by Blackwateranvillc »

If anyone is looking for an excellent "cold cut" saw with miter capability, this is the way to go. WE have used this for 1 week, and should have bought one a year ago,
Nice true cuts,
Not annoyingly loud
Great price

I have that same saw - but the less expensive version that I bought probably 7 years ago. I like it and it works great for cutting thick aluminum bar or channel. For cutting steel, the thing I don't like is all of the little sharp metal bits it leaves when it cuts. If you clean them up right away, then you don't have to worry about them getting stuck in the bottom of your shoes and tracking then all around the shop.

The blade that mine came with seems to work equally well for steel and aluminum.

That new version looks very handy with that improved clamping system and swivel head.

This is the version I have.

Agreed! I don't think they offered that option back when I bought mine What they have now looks very much like the swivel setup on my Hitachi miter saw. If I were buying now, I would go for the upgraded version you have.

I bought a Dewalt unit like this many years ago and love it but a friend of mine just bought a unit the same as adbuch's and it is far more impressive and less money. The base on my Dewalt is stamped thin sheet metal and has warped and bent on me over the years, this base looks far superior. These cold cut saws are the way to go.

I have the 14" Evolution but my trigger is different on the motor and the clamp threaded rod is different too. Maybe the model after hammer and chisel one. :HaHa :HaHa

Tom- they may have changed the model versions over the years. I think I bought mine around 2017 or so. I also have a regular chop saw with abrasive wheel that I have used often in the past - but not so much anymore. These days - unless it is heat treated steel - I generally use one of my horizontal band saws for this sort of work.

I too purchased one of those bad boys several months back for my home shop. I love it, and yes they are VERY LOUD.
I also have evolutions 14" miter chop saw, But the Compound miter saw is a game changer for sure. And now have both style saws, cut off saws. They are pricey. I think around $800 but are really a nice saw. I even use my old abrasive chop saw a few times when I didnt want to damage the $100 blade
I even had our apprenticesip coordinator purchase one for our welding shop a well s that we could cut up welding test coupons before bend testing them as well as cut up various other shop stuff where I work part time in the evenings as a welding instructor (Sheet metal Workers Local 104).
I wear ear muffs over my ear plugs. And definitely safety glasses and a face shield. Gotta set the example:-)

Doug - I have used mine mainly for aluminum - same thing - I don't want to damage the blade. I've got a chop saw and band saws for steel cutting. Here is what mine looks like.

Yes - I wear hearing protectors in addition to my normal ear plugs when using these - they are quite loud. And of course - glasses and protective face shield.

I seem to remember that they offer some different blades for steel, aluminum, and such. The 14" blade that came on my saw also works well for aluminum - round bar, heavy channel, etc.

I don't even see the model number on mine anywhere.

I think it uses a separate blade for stainless as well, which is a few bucks more . I used my old but still working 12” chop half to death then upgraded to the 14” evolution, then splurged on the miter chop from evolution as soon as it came out. Here are my 3 saws. The miter chop gets its own cart . The other two are relegated to a lower shelf and are now seldom used .. I do love the quick release on the tool clamp. omn both of my evolution saws. Thats way better than winding and unwinding the clamp to adjust for different materials.
