Hello, I’m Adam from Maine. I have been self-learning CAD on Shaper3D and cutting on a Crossfire table since July of ‘24. It’s been fun and frustrating but also rewarding and productive. Here to learn more and share.

Hi Adam - welcome aboard! Shaper3D is one that I had not heard of before. I downloaded it and there was some sort of very basic tutorial about how to use the mouse, but after that it wouldn't do anything so I went ahead and uninstalled it. From the reviews I read - they say it is more for simple 2D shapes and not for the more complex solid models. Are you using it only for 2D drawings to use for plasma cutting? Also are you using a free version or the subscription version?

We would be very interested to see what sorts of projects you have been creating using Shaper3D and your Langmuir table. Perhaps post a few pictures so we can see what you have been up to.

I am a subscribed user of the software. It is actually geared more for 3D modeling than 2D sketches but works and is fairly simple to learn. I’ve found it to be quirky but I just could not grasp Fusion well enough to be productive.
Another nice feature is being able to make a sketch remotely on my IPad at the location and then fine tune it on my laptop. Can easily share 2D/3D models with you client for approval if needed.

That's great that it works on the iPad. Many of the others don't. I have Affinity Designer on my iPad, and it is great for hand tracing. Otherwise - I use mostly cad programs on my pc. I do very much like (and use) Fusion 360 - mainly for solid modeling for 3D printing - although it is pretty simple to use just for cad drawings to export as dxf for plasma cutting.

To post photos, you just click on "Full editor and preview", then "Attachments", then "Add files", then select your file or image and "Place inline". Then click "Preview" to see what it looks like before actually hitting "Submit".

Shapr3D does not have the ability to build in 3D and unfold for sheetmetal cutting.

I had a problem with the start page look of Fusion 360, once I got past that it works very well and the tools fall into places with other CAD software. It is such a very powerful program and free it is very hard not to learn and use it. Atp you should give it another chance, I think you will like it, there are so many YouTube tutorials. Many have a different approach one may fit you and things start to click.

With Fusion 360 - other than unfolding notched tubes for creating flat patterns, I have never been able to take a solid model, convert it to sheet metal, and unfold it. I have only been able to unfold sheet metal bodies that have previously been folded using the associated sketch to indicate the bend lines.

Yes Adam - your links worked for me. Those are nice images to show your customer. I suppose you could create the 3D models for the parts with bends using your Shapr3d software - and then share them as well. In Fusion 360 - if you build your solid model - then you can project the faces and save as dxf for cutting.

Here is an example where the solid model was created first, and then projections were created from the two faces and exported as dxf files. Then the two dxf files can be imported to another cad program for creating the cut files.
