Large HD Torchmate 3 Table Looking To Upgrade for HVAC

Post by JDB »

Hello All and Thanks in Advance for any Help or Guidance!

Ive got a small lower volume shop with a 7' x 14' TM3 Table we built around 15 years ago and its time for a new electronics and motors upgrade.

I know anything in the electronics world is ever changing and I'm prepared to spend whatever it takes for reliable, accurate and faster cutting primarily for HVAC type work but can't afford to overspend or do the upgrade twice.

My initial plan was to go with flashcut due to their Torchmate relationship and supposed "cash for clunkers" upgrade assistance advertisements etc but after finding a New Flashcut Kit on Ebay from one of their prior OEM kit builders Anne has apparently decided to not help me whatsoever nor sell me the software to even run the controller.

Needless to say my enthusiasm for flashcut after 9 days of no email response or returned phone calls, has soured to say the least.

I know i want outstanding THC performance, around 350 IPM cut speed capability and much faster rapids but I'm unsure if I need or want servos.

Any and all advice is sincerely appreciated!

I would start a list on your machine as to what needs rebuilt / replaced, the gantry appears to be aluminum so your anticipated rapids are not a problem. I get 1100 ipm on my rapids with a 400 lb gantry, but general do not cut anything thinner than 16 ga.

You will need estimated weights for sizing the motors properly and I always go with more than it needs as you never know what your going to hang off the skate on the gantry. I have room for a torch, air drill & scribe on my setup. A felt tip pen holder would be really handy for layout out things or assigning part #'s.

How is the slides on z axis do they need new bearings? Do you have a torch breakaway setup?? Lots of variables but now is the time to do them. Your long axis appears to be the TM signature skate bearings on Cold Roll flat. My 2x2 TM has them as well, when I built the 6x12 I went to a larger bearing to cut down on rolling friction and add life to them. I used a 6201 bearing and a Wheel Stud (M12-1.5 x 42.1MM) part # 610-360. I chucked up a lug nut in my drill press for that thread size / pitch screwed in a stud and filled the serrations down to where it was a slight press fit inside of the bearing.

Those old parts if still working properly would help pay for your new set up, ask away with any additional questions.

The Old TM THC is a "torch lifter" and the as a "smart" motor ( not a standard stepper. Newer controls are "closed Loop" and tool path aware meaning they are part of the whole XYZ motion and have direct feedback . A lot of the functions (like IHS ) and tool selection (auto THC settings) are now out of the software, making setup and run of jobs a LOT easier. No knobs to twist, no settings to manually change and and extremely fast response that allows cutting thin material and even corrugated.
We publish our prices (no call for quote) and we have a wide selection of systems . 90% of the old Torchmate (including the TH3) were 23 frame steppers on the XY (under powered ) so a retro is pretty easy. You probably need to consider a Z axis replacement that has the sensors and the full Z interface. The DTHC5 is a Z axis controller that handles both plasma in closed loop and Real Time and any other type tool (router, oxy-fuel, plate marker. etc ) without a lot of changes and drama .
The Super Z ii We sell is a heavy Duty multi-cut Z axis with built in Ohmic Sensor (for thin material touch off) and can move vertically over 300 IPM . Multiple CONFIGS (Profiles) let you quickly change the type material you cut from thick to ultra thin or switch to a different type cutting tool.

We have done a lot of the TM tables as well as other brands so as they say: "it 's not our first rodeo" !
Our systems a re Turn Key meaning they come WITH the new PC preloaded with software and have custom POSTs for SheetCAM for Plasma (with Hypertherm Toolsets) and for Routing and Plate Marking.

Call us , send a Request For Support (RFS, or a Message form from the website. They WILL get answered .
