DIY Belt grinder for sale, I have build 4 of these grinders using Jeremy Schmidt's construction plans. This grinder has a 2 HP 3 PH motor with VFD for converting 220 Volt AC standard house voltage. The VFD has a remote control panel which can be located away from the grinder itself for on/off and speed controls.
Construction is 2” square tube, 2.5” square tube, and 3/8” plate. Most of the grinder is Powder coated for looks and easy cleaning. Aluminum wheels with sealed bearings one is used as a tracking wheel and is fully adjustable for aligning the belt while in use. This is commonly called a knife grinder, not being a knife maker I use it as a standard shop grinder for many projects. The platen can be removed for a slack belt type grinding to shape metal. It has a table for a flat surface to maneuver what is being ground, which can be adjusted to a 45 degree angle. The grinder can be rotated from a horizontal to a vertical to change the grinding direction relation to the table. Comes with 2 new belts for the grinder. this is the last one I built and is all new only used in the Demo.

In your opinion, how well will this work for removing the dross off from plasma cut metal. We are selling products with the mill scale on the metal, so I'm grinding the dross off with a die grinder and was wondering if the belt grinder would work easier for this job?

To be honest it will do that but there are other tools that will do a better job. Personally I use a 50/50 mix of muriatic acid and water and soak the metal overnight. Here are some images of dross removal I did (parts to the belt grinder 3/8" steel). The first is before and the second is after soak.
Many don't like working with acid but this is the stuff used in swimming pools plus water, both Home Depot and Lowes sell it. the last ones are 4 pieces of 3/8" stacked together equals 1.5" ground flat and square again parts for the grinder do with my other 2 X 72" grinder.
Now I do want to sell the grinder, but it that all you need it for you may reconsider. Great tool addition to a shop.

Tom shows and excellent before/after example using the acid bath to dissolve the dross. I have used this method and it works well. My other method is to use and angle grinder with "flap-discs" - usually of grits 40, 60, and 80. I then often follow this up with a stationary belt sander (similar to the one Tom is offering) to sand/deburr the outer edges. Mine is a Grizzly brand "knife sander", but I would say the one Tom is offering is more versatile than the Grizzly.

But if you have lots of parts to do, then short of spending the "big bucks" for a wide belt sanding machine like the one shown below, the acid bath would probably be the most cost effective method for processing large batches of parts.

Will this mixture of 50/50 mix of muriatic acid and water and soak the metal overnight also remove the mill scale?
I have been using a die grinder to keep from removing any more of the mill scale from off the back side than possible.

I do want all the mill scale off the metal, it is better for painting or powder coating. I do also clean the metal with a washing soda detergent after soaking before painting or powder coating. This gives a better surface for adhesion or coatings. I have project in my shop that are still clean with out coating.

Yes sir 6 grinder and 10 tables, had fun with each, now to find another new projects got to keep the old gray matter active.
Actually I did build another small one with a different type of motor drive, a 7" grinder motor (variable speed) from HF. It uses a 42" belt for a more compact package, and 120 volt AC input.

Tom - the powder coat finish on your red grinder looks outstanding! Very smooth and glossy. You may have answered this before - but where did you buy the aluminum pulleys/rollers?

They are sold by both Ebay and Amazon. I buy the ones with 3 bearings in them with 1/2" bore.

Tom - maybe another good idea might be to create a "Welder Series" kit for the belt grinders. This would be a set of metal parts where the buyer welds them together. Show instructions with photos of step-by-step assembly - sort of like I do with my Welder Series English Wheel Kits. Or has someone already done this for the belt grinders? I know that Jeremy has plans, not sure about kits.

I just sent you a pm with my English Wheel Welder Series kit plans and manual so you can get some ideas of how I document these kits. Lots of pictures and step-by-step instructions.
