VCarve Pro Text - Spacing Between Letters

Would you happen to know how to space text in the original texting format. I can do it once I convert to curves,. But then I have to space it regroup it and then resenter to subject.

If I convert to text on curve it gives me the option for text spacing. I tried to do it on a straight line with no luck. From what I've found out it has to be on a slight curve before it gives you the option period but I know there has to be a more simple way to do it

It does appear that VCarve Pro/Aspire does not offer the text spacing option. You can create a curved path with zero height between the endpoints, fit the text to this path, adjust the text spacing, and it will still be centered on the line. Here is how I would do that.

This would be much quicker to do using Inkscape (free program). With Inkscape, you would simply type your text and it gives you the option to adjust the spacing. Then you can snap the text to the center of a straight line, rectangle, etc. If you convert your Inkscape text to paths, then you can save your file as svg (or dxf) and import it to VCarve Pro. See last screen shot.

Thanks for that David. Just getting started with Vcarve after being impressed with it at a friends shop and using it with his cnc router.

You are quite welcome! I typically use VCarve Pro/Aspire for my cnc router, and something like Design Edge for my cnc plasma table. I also like Inkscape, and I often end up doing different operations with the different software and then combining them for the finished file.

As an example, I recently built a mount to attach my Plasmacam engraving attachment to my AvidCNC router table. For my test files, I created the text with Design Edge exported as dxf - then imported it to VCarve Pro/Aspire to create the cut paths and save as g-code. And finally - I imported the gcode to Mach3 for the actual engraving.

The OP was asking if it was possible to adjust the spacing between letters in text format without converting it to curves (fit to path). VCarve Pro/Aspire does not offer that option. He will need to fit to path first, then he will have the option to adjust the text spacing. I have already explained this previously, but here it is again for those that missed it the first time.

The text editor does not offer the option for infinitely variable text character spacing. Using the text editor space bar will not accomplish this. The text must be fit to a path (curved or straight) to enable this option.

I set kerning for the TEXT in the first example. No spacebar was used.

I set kerning for the word spacing in the second example. No spacebar was used.

Could you explain your advice. I would like to try to achieve this.

David explained what I was originally asking but I am willing to learn other options.

I greatly appreciate all the help i can get. I've got a LONG ways to go to learn this one program.... maybe when i get comfortable with V-Carve I can branch out to other programs for additional options.

V-Carve is powerful program. It does not have the same behaviors as other programs, but it CAN do the same things, as I have demonstrated.

INFINITELY VARIABLE CHARACTER SPACING IN VCARVE.jpg

1. Use the DRAW TEXT - WITHIN A VECTOR BOX tool.

2. Enter your text in the small white window at the top left.

3. Choose your FONT.

4. Set text alignment to CENTER.

5.Enter BOUNDING BOX DIMENSIONS:
a. Enter Text HEIGHT first
b. Enter BOUNDING BOX WIDTH second. Remember that there is a ONE CHARACTER MARGIN to the outside of the text on both sides.

6. Set HORIZONTAL STRETCH to STRETCH KERNING This will maintain the size and shape of the characters, but it will change the width of the spacing between characters AND the width of the spacing between words proportionally.

7. ADJUST WIDTH of bounding box (+) or (-) (VALUE) to determine total width of line of text based on kerning and text height.

NOTE: If your bounding box width is less than the minimum length required to maintain character height, the kerning and the margins, V-Carve and Aspire will reduce the size of the text proportionally. It will not cram the letters together. It will reduce the text HEIGHT to conform to the restricted WIDTH you enter.

Making the bounding box width WIDER with kerning ON will space the text incrementally, based on the number you enter. You can increase the TOTAL LENGTH of a line of text one-thousandth of an inch at a time, if you have the patience!

I will make a video showing you how to do infinitely adjustable text spacing in V-Carve. Give me a little time to pull it together.
