.tap to dxf?

Curious has anyone successfully converted a .tap file back to dxf? I cut a standing deer in a sawblade awhile back and all i can locate is the .tap file..
or is there a way to resize a .tap file? appreciate any help

I don't think you will find that conversion, the .tap has extra info added to it.
What you could try is to take a picture of it against a flat background and do a trace in Inkscape and resize it to create a new DXF file.

I think it was just a file I found online somewhere was just curious if it was possible

If youre using sheetcam, you can import the .tap file and then scale it to the size you want then rerun the post.

Ok I got the same as the first image, please explain the steps you used. I tried using .TAP files that I generated with SheetCam.

Tom in sheetcam, import the tap file as gcode instead of excellon and it should open up.

Thanks Rokcrler I had tried to use the .tap just below it, you can teach an old dog new tricks.
I'm sure it will be handy to use.

I did end up taking a pic off the screen and used Inkscape to trace it.. still better than starting from scratch as I couldn't even find the image

Here is how I do it:

• import tap file

• setup operations

• In sheetcam, go to Options, Machine, Select DXF post

• Save the file and open with your DXF program

Now you have your DXF

Dont forget to note down the post you normally use... dont ask how i know...

ROKCRLER: Trying this with a .nc file thinking it should be similar but having no success. Importing as .nc get nothing. As Gcode get image, but can't get DXF to generate. Also tried changing suffix on file to .tap. Unable to attache .nc file - nor the .tap file - "ineligible file types". File is from Langmuir Fire Share. Any advice appreciated.

I downloaded this file from fireshare, import in sheetcam with gcode, put all the inside on Inside layer and the outside on outside layer then ran the post (make sure you change it to DXF).
Opened the file in Qcad. It still needs some cleaning up like the lead in/outs.. but we have a dxf from .nc now.

Imported to Sheetcam:

Cleaned up in QCad (removed rapids and lead ins) :

Imported to Sheetcam for operations (I did have to scale it to get the insides to cut):

I attached both the .NC and DXF. For the .NC, remove the extra .dxf extension after .NC

ROKCRLER: Thx for your quick response and your patience. But, I'm still missing a step somewhere. Tried it with the 1001 usa 20 ipm2.nc file and with the one I want and no dxf in either case. Sheetcam window and Zip file for image I'm working on are attached (I hope).

Looking at your examples, I am expecting to wind up with a file ending in .dxf and just not getting there. If you've got the time to take a look at these, I'd sure appreciate your help.

Extract/Unzip
Import in sheetcam

Separated parts into layers, Inside and Outside and deleted the extra lines. you might have to extend some lines on some parts, I did.

You are the man! Thanks to you and Mike Caffey, file originator, looks like the six year old mechanically inclined great-grandson is going to have a nice birthday present. And, yes, if you have time video would be great. I'd like to know: 1) what I am missing to get the DXF and 2) how I can do this in the future for other projects.

Rokcrler - thanks for that great explanation. I don't use Sheetcam - but for many here who do this is a very handy method for recovering lost dxf files from existing nc files.

Double S Farms - here is another method I have used in the past with great success that does not involve Sheetcam.

Step 1 - download and install G-Code Ripper (free download).

Step 2 - Open G-Code Ripper, set to Export (DXF, CSV)
Step 3 - Open the G-code file
Step 4 - Export as DXF

Once you have the dxf, use your vector editor of choice to edit out rapid moves and lead-ins and save for import to Sheetcam or your cam program of choice. Here I have showed editing the file with Inkscape, but other programs such as the one Rokcrler used will work as well.
