First Attempt at Wood

I told a neighbor that I would help her create two signs for some grandkids. I had to hustle to remember how to connect the laser to my laptop, and set up the dxf file. This is the result. I was happy, but I see rookie mistakes, such as the grain on two letters horizontal and two vertical, etc. Live and learn...

I've done a ton of work in the past with stainless and we always ran with the grain, polished corners and blended and would criticize tables etc.. we'd see when out and about that they weren't as detailed..
Now I like the wild look of running a "tiger paw" across a piece of stainless to give it a wild look...

This is just the 20 Watt blue diode laser. I also have two new 40 Watt blue diode laser heads for these machines, as well as two 1064nm IR laser heads. I am so excited to know that the 55 Watt Model P2 CO2 laser I ordered from X-TOOL is going to be shipped very soon. I may have to hire someone to dust off my plasma tables once I dive into these LASERS, so they don't look too neglected!

Tom - I actually like the fact that the grain runs in different directions. I think it gives it character and really makes it pop! Jut my opinion.

She used satin spray paint on the letters. It didn't cover the grain, but it did give the wood a nice pink tint.

I do like my cnc router, but it is SO NICE to not need to hold the material down or worry about the tool getting away from you. The laser just cuts the letters out perfectly, and they FALL out of the material, with a nice black edge. The black can be removed with white vinegar.

This new product called Alien Tape is great for this. You lay down a couple of strips, and because it is double-sided clear tape, it holds anything in place. Chips and such are not a problem, because Alien Tape can be WASHED under warm water, dried, and used AGAIN! It retains its stickiness after you wash away wood chips, plastic chips and other debris.

However, among the many projects I have that are half completed is a 5x10 foot vac table that will hold down material. It is set up to be a grid of individual chambers, with each chamber having rotating vent openings that either close off the vacuum or suck down the material that covers it. Each chamber is controlled by a gate valve that applies vacuum to that chamber and all of the vents above it, so I can be selective about where the vacuum is applied to the material. The round vents are 1.5" in diameter, so it will hold down very small pieces.

All I really need to do is to clone myself about 24 times, to get al of these things done.

I went a little rogue again with the router attachment. There is a caveman I did a metal wall hanger with plasma some time back. This time it was 1/4" MDF again using Inkscape to break up the image and cut out the separate parts and painted them. I used a 45 degree bit for most of the parts for definition and 1/8" end mill for the back. Using MDF for a backer plate too and glued them on and epoxied a clear coat on them all. the metal one is the last image
