Chevy Motor Mount for Run in stand
Building a run in stand and did not want to use the ugly factory to engine block mounts. So I drew these up and cut one out of this stuff first to make sure I am good. Final product will be 1/4" plate. Slices in it for bending without a brake.
These will fit any Small Block, Big Block and 6.2/6.5 diesel family as well as V-6s. NOT LS. I will upload the file soon from my other computer. Just grabbed these off my phone. The height of the ear tabs can also be adjusted to fit your needs. Such as to make the engine to sit where you want it in your hot rod or whatever.

What mounts to it? The alternator?

Re: Chevy Motor Mount for Run in stand
Nice job on those motor mounts for mock-up. Obviously the thin material shown is not meant for actually supporting the engine in operation, but great for testing the fit when doing an engine conversion to fit check mounting to cross member or frame rail supports. The finished mounts from 1/4" plate should be plenty strong. I am used to using the standard mounts with rubber blocks, or the donuts on the rigid style hot rod mounts. Thanks for sharing this!TJS wrote: Fri Apr 15, 2022 11:28 am Building a run in stand and did not want to use the ugly factory to engine block mounts. Re: Chevy Motor Mount for Run in stand
Joe these are engine mounts that bolt to the side of Chevy V-8 including 6.2/6.5 Diesels or V-6 blocks (NOT LS). I will be using a thicker version as a final product. These will be used for my Engine run stand which allows me to run the engine before putting it into a vehicle. Some say it is an un-necessary extra step to pre run an engine on a stand outside of the vehicle, but it really is a time saver if you find an issue (leak, gasket, etc.).
These can also be used in place of a stock chevy block to mount, to mount to the engine mount that is bolted to the subframe in a chevy vehicle. That is what the ears are for. A bolt goes thru those hose capturing a factory chevy mount (rubber and steel) that is bolted to chevy subframes. Hope this helps. I will be doing a post on my run in stand when I fully get to it.

Solid engine mounts ... no shock or vibration buffer ... I remember when these were popular back in the 70s, in the days of the muscle cars. Once in a while, the engine would produce SO MUCH torque, that wall of the engine block itself would fail, having nothing to absorb the sudden forces applied to the side of the block. It is possible to make V-8 engine very powerful. I guess people still use them.

In a stock chevy mount configuration the vibration damping is in the mount on the factory subframe where the captured bolt goes thru. No solid mounts in a stock config.Joe Jones wrote: Mon Apr 18, 2022 10:08 amAh, I didn't catch that in the previous post.TJS wrote: Mon Apr 18, 2022 7:34 am

It has been some 40+ years since I have crawled under a car. I used to rebuild my own engines, and replace my own clutches, and do my own brakes, etc. Those days are long behind me now.TJS wrote: Mon Apr 18, 2022 10:23 am

Re: Chevy Motor Mount for Run in stand
I will, the holes where it mounts to the block lined up well - I had to widen the rest a bit to fit over the stock mount on the frame...
Let me get back to the computer and I will try and post my revised version. Thanks!

Re: Chevy Motor Mount for Run in stand
These were more designed for an engine run stand I built. Sounds like you are on track to make it work with factory clamshells on the engine cross-member.DJC wrote: Tue Dec 17, 2024 1:31 pm I will, the holes where it mounts to the block lined up well - I had to widen the rest a bit to fit over the stock mount on the frame...

Yes - I understood they were for a test stand, I did want to see if I could adapt them to the factory frame mount and I think I got it. You provided a good file for me to use, thanks for the good work!

Re: Chevy Motor Mount for Run in stand
DJC, Maybe add that file here if U can? Some other members may want to give it a whirl out of light gauge to check fit before making out of plate. What thickness is a good gauge to handle that much torque?DJC wrote: Tue Dec 17, 2024 1:48 pm Yes - I understood they were for a test stand, I did want to see if I could adapt them to the factory frame mount and I think I got it. Also, I have found that on thicker plate (3/16" and up) the plasma notch used to bend easily usually snaps, or at least tears enough that the two parts are barely hanging on. I have been separating the two parts in CAD and just plan on welding the pieces since the torn remnants often get in the way for a clean weld fit up, easpecially since when plasma sliced at the brake, it will need to be welded out anyway..

Re: Chevy Motor Mount for Run in stand
I will try and post the dxf., I need to relearn how to post - I don't do it very often. My test pieces were made out of 1/8" and fit well. For actual use I will probably go 3/16" or 1/4". You are correct with that that thickness of metal I will separate the "ears" from the piece that mounts to the block itself using the frame mount as a fixture to hold and line everything into place...thanks

In the future if you post a dxf, know that when you post the lead ins etc. I am pretty sure it includes whatever kerf you compesated in the gauge that you saved it, and may not be as accureate to a guy who wants to cut out of a different gauge. A clean dxf of the original CAD drawing works best, letting the end user use his/her software adjust for kerf based on thier plasma cutter cut charts and gauge needing to be cut. FYI..
Looks good!

Re: Chevy Motor Mount for Run in stand
That's super cool, thanks for doing that with the dimensions! The triangular pieces are from a different set of mounts I built, was just using them to get the bolt spacing - thanks again!
