Wind Vane

Post by ruralfencer »

Just a quick question and a drawing I'm working on for a weather vane. The red layer should be all drops but I'm trying to figure out how to cut around the ship and keep the waves at the bottom. Is it best to box it like I have? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Cheers Mick

If you attach the file someone here will most likely fix it for you, and explain what they did. It may be as simple as putting breaks in the closed parts of the ship's bottom and some of the waves

Thanks. I think I have worked it out. I divided the at the intersection and down a bit then deleted the line. Hoping the simple fix will work

Mick - that looks great! I see you are using Q-Cad and having good success with it. That is also good to know.

Thanks David. I come from cnc lathe background and still trying to get my head around drops and things. I think dividing the hull path was the best solution for keeping a close to what my mate wants without dropping out the water.
I like working with layers so I can work with offsets for the art works I'm trying

Mick - I too do quite a bit of lathe cnc work. One consideration for your ship piece, depending on what size you are making it, and how it will be mounted - is the two areas shown below. For the overall size of about 10 x 11 inches, those two small tabs are all that is attaching the bottom portion of your ship to the top. I would consider making them a bit wider to help to stiffen up the attachment points.

Thanks, I will make them bigger, they are only that small as an indication of if I was on the right track

That's a nice looking piece! What is the overall size, and how thick is the material?
Good job.

Approx 390 wide by 320 high, 2mm thick.
My mate was most impressed and we are looking at doing them in a kit form with compass points included.

Thanks for the advice David I am getting there just need more time at the machine

Getting help makes the learning time shorter. Learning to look for drops come quickly after a few things are pointed out, like lone length, or following shapes. Adding layers makes some art projects pop and can add additional colors easier. You could break the sails and waves out for layers. Now really going all in you could make the sails have a billowing shape. Whoops man overboard, I get pushie sometimes. :HaHa :HaHa
