Stepping on straight cuts

Post by ATPPF »

Looking for help on what could be causing this....
Set up is plasma route table
Victor plasma cutter
Using sheetcam and mach 3
Problem used to be minor and now seems to be getting worse and more frequent. Have tested with torch off, still does the same thing. Have also checked all gears and rollers, everything appears to be good and tight.

What format is the drawing file? It almost looks like there are nodes that are out of line. I would check the drawings first.

It's drawn on art cam... I would agree with the nodes, however this happens on everything, different files.

I would say you have something slipping, remove the drive parts on motor shafts, gears, pulleys. they may feel tight but something is not right, a giveaway is if something will not come off easy. This is when a setscrew has dug a grove in the motor shaft of other. When removing any drive parts you should only see a dot where the setscrew contacts the shaft, when you find the grove you found your problem.

acourtjester, thank you for the pointer, this is what I found following your lead.

Now, next question, is this safe to weld while all attach as it sits or should a person take it all apart?
Any harm in welding it in place?

If you are going to weld in place I would remove all power to the table electronics before you weld, and attach the weld work lead to the gear so the weld is very localized.

I would agree with that. Try to attach your welder ground clamp very close to the area being welded. It's not clear, but are you planning to weld the pinion gear to the shaft?

Oh man I wouldn't weld that onto the shaft. A little loctight on the setscrew that attaches the pinion gear to the shaft is all I would do. Maybe you don't have a setscrew but what is supposed to hold that pinion gear onto the shaft there?

Oh dear I welded mine on 6yrs ago, just a few quick tacks on the outside and keep it cool.
There looks to be a good bit of wear on the gear, you might be better replacing them, check the rack as well, bit of chain lube on there helps.

Thanks everyone for the help. Looked like the weld had broke, there was no set screw on that gear and shaft.
I did remove the power and put my ground clamp right on the gear and put 2 tacks on it. When I would power the table up I could move that side over 3/4" back and forth...lol
Works great now!!!
Thanks again
