Blackening Steel

I am doing some work for an architect and a cabinet maker that really likes blackened steel, any of you guys done this process? I would be very interested in any tips or cautions to look out for?

Can you use hot rolled and skip the whole black process? We've been blackening for about 12 years and have finally found process that works well. You can see some of our work here: http://www.johnbecksteel.com

Happy to help where I can. We use Birchwood Casey for black and Sherwin Williams Polane and Opex for clears.

I bought some Sculpt Nouveau Black Magic patina. Only dabbled a little on a test piece but it blackens cold roll pretty well.
