patina for Steel Fireplace surround

I currently have an ugly blue tile on my gas fireplace and have been thinking about possibly putting steel over the tile with a rust like patina. The fireplace really never gets used but when it does the tile gets warm. Is there a product that would work to patina the steel and hold up well? Anyone ever do something like this before? Thanks!
