Good HVLP Spray Gun for Clear Coat

Post by rons »

For spraying 2 part clear we all know that the Iwata is the best but is there another good option let say around $100-$150, I have tried the Northerntool at $65 http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/ ... _200319463
I found it just OK not great the pattern is not even no matter how much you adjust it this gun is a 1.4 tip would a 1.3 be better?
So what guns are your recommendations ?
Thanks Ron

Get a Graco Sharpe Finex FX3000 1.3 tip from Amazon, best paint gun on the market for the money. Makes clear coat look like glass. I have several of these in various tip sizes and shoot industrial paint also. I have pretty much thrown out all the other paint guns I have. You won't be disappointed.

What about the smaller Finex FX1000 most of my art work is sprayed with 2oz. or so I was thinking a smaller gun would be easier to get around the edges, I am using the 3M PPS cups what a great system.

I would think the smaller gun is just as good as its big brother. I can't give you any info on that one since I don't own it. I am sold on that line of guns though. If I was to buy a small touch up gun that's the one I would buy first.

How much do you guys spray at once? I realize a good 2 part automotive clear the the best way to go (with a spray). However, I don't feel I shoot enough (at a time) to mix up a batch. As small as the batch would be, followed by cleaning, it seem I'd be chasing paint cleanup duty more than anything else. That's part of the reason I've just stuck with the Nason rattlecan stuff from the auto parts store.

I sometimes spray small parts or many at once, small batches not a problem. You will actually save time and get a better results using a gun even with cleanup duties. I just use a cheap gun cleaner and buy in gallon containers, it does not take much to run some through the gun, then put fresh in and let it sit until next use. Rattle cans have a place just not for me when it comes to clear.

I am very happy with my purchase in fact I can't imagine a gun at any price to be better, very compact and easy to get around to the edges, with the 3M system you can even go upside down, now my only problem is the artwork comes out so glass like it's hard to take a photo of it.

It is almost hard to mess up clear coat with those guns! It always comes out looking like glass for me also. Let's hope they don't change the design and jack it up. Glad you like it.

I'm getting ready to order the Fx1000, solely for clear coat work. I'll also order the PPS cup system. I'm not highly educated on paint details...do I want the 1.0, 1.2, or 1.4 tip?

I was going to buy the same gun but looked over the 3M gun with changeable nozzles with the PPS system. This is what I bought with 2 cup sizes.

I use a 1.0 tip because I like the smaller fan pattern for the smaller pieces we cut and spray. I can spray with a lot less overspray and waist a lot less paint.

what kind of clear coat do you use if you don't mind me asking? I've been using rattle cans and would like to use something more durable.

Love the thread. Is there a new gun kit there you guys like? Or will the guns spoken about here still be good?

Also, if I wanted to add metal flakes to my clear, which tips/gun should I look at?

Cheers
