I've colored stainless before using a torch. I'm trying to achieve more definition to the areas. Best example I can give is being done by http://metalfish66.com/
Check out the crab....and figure out how that is being done?!? My best guess is it is 2 layers? How are the heat zones so well defined when the piece of stainless "soaks" up the heat

Re: Torch coloring stainless steel
The crab looks awesome but I don't believe it was done with a torch. Looks more like dyes or candy paints to me.

Quote direct from his website
" The array of colors is achieved by controlled heat, a process known as fire color. The colors are not painted on, but rather drawn out of the metal by different temperatures of heat."
It takes a bit of practice with the torch to work out flame intensity and when to pull the torch away as it will continue to colour after the torch is removed. Tip size also plays a part to make sure you are heating it quick enough or not too quick so you don't turn the whole piece blue.

Re: Torch coloring stainless steel
I will never believe all those colors and fine lines were done entirely by a torch.
