Suggestions on how to achieve this look
I need to recreate this technique /look on a much larger scale. It appears that they have braised brass onto the mild steel and sanded it down a bit. I'm open for suggestions on how to achieve this the easiest and cheapest way?
Thanks,
Steve

Looks like they brazed over it with a bronze rod.

You may contact the guy at "SteelFX" about his Copper F/X you may be able to used a eye dropper to spot the places you want copper color to be.
In place of the normal spray application
It will not have the texture of the blobs of copper but may do what you want.

He could achieve the blobs by just placing short welds randomly along the letters, then touch with a grinder to polish and then apply with dropper the copper FX. Should work, but time consuming. It will not have the texture of the blobs of copper but may do what you want.

What an awesome looking sign! Looks like he cut the letters and then hit it with a flap disk or something like it, then either top welded the pattern you see and hit with steel fx copper dye or braised with bronze. Then hit the tops with a flap disk.

It looks like the base metal is Stainless and they used a mig welder with regular steel and then hit it with Steel FX Copper after using a grinder.

Re: Suggestions on how to achieve this look
I think your initial impression of brass rod brazed onto steel is correct. I played with this some, initially tried copper, but even with flux it would never stick to the steel. It would just wet out, and then roll off and drip and then fall off when it was cooled. Hard to tell from the picture if it's brass, or bronze rod. Tricky part is getting the flux where you want it, if you get carried away with the flux, and the piece is good and hot, then the flux will actually pull the metal you are brazing around with it, and can carry it where you may not want it. Of course, if the random look is what you are going for, no worries. Only other thing I can think of, is that the brass or bronze is a lot softer than the steel, so go easy with the sanding otherwise you might get to do it twice.
If you tackle it, post up some pics for us to see.

Re: Suggestions on how to achieve this look
hello, i have done this many times before. used more brazing rod and never sanded it, just cleaned with a wire brush and some tarnex (spelled wrong i'm sure) mine have alot more on them but it didn't start out that way. first pass looked much like what you want to do. i preheated the parts in the forge and used oxy/ acetylene to finish them off. flux covered ron with spoonfulls of flux added. most took 3 passes to get the coverage i have. i'll try and find a close up pic, but you can see spots of steel showing through if you look hard.

TIG welding Silicon Bronze and buffing would work.
