65/85 - multiple torches setup?

Post by whiskeymike »

Can the 65/85 support a machine torch and handheld torch at the same time with only one in use? Is there a splitter or something similar available? I'd like to be able to use the same machine for hand cuts and machine cuts. I could swap it on the machine, but thought there might be a way around that.

If not, does it take long? or is the best approach to have two machines? I don't mind stepping up to the larger 85 if I don't have to buy a second machine.

Swapping it on the machine takes literally seconds. Unplug one torch plug in the other.

As stated above, it takes seconds. As in turn off the power, click unplug one, plug in the other one, turn the power back on. Just as quick as changing the attachment on your air hose. No joke.

Simply unplug one torch, plug the other in, reset the power switch.

when we bought our table and hypertherm 65 we bought both torches
the hand torch rarely gets used, but when they need it, it's an easy swap
25 ft hand torch will reach the fab table or a car on the first hoist
bulltear 4x8 cnc plasma table, candcnc bladerunner w/dthc, hypertherm powermax 65, sheetcam, mach3

Thanks folks. Very helpful.

Has anyone seen a significant cost benefit to buying both right off the bat? From what I've seen on most retailer sites, it isn't much different than buying them as one kit. I'm buying my handheld first and won't have a table for up to 6 months. Thinking that waiting to buy the machine torch for later would be better as I'll lose 6 months of warranty until my table is built and operational. Might also be able to find a used one.

I let my supplier know that I cut for a living, and I am going to be running the nuts off the machine torch. If they want any of my business for consumables (which could easily be half of a new machine in a year) then they damn well better get the SHARP pencil out when they quote my machine package, I just bought a PM85 with a 25ft hand torch, and 50ft machine torch, and after the above conversation, I got the package for what they wanted just for the power supply with the hand torch. So basically, the machine torch was free. I also try to make a point to but things like that a week or so before the end of the quarter. They have numbers to meet, and are a lot more willing to compromise at the end of a sales period that at the beginning.
