Re: Multi layered art work
I use 3M VHB double sided tape to hold my stuff together. I used it to attach the gear tracks on my CNC table to the rails. It's pretty good stuff.

Re: Multi layered art work
Depends on what you are doing and how much Space you need between layers.
I use weld nuts and machine screws from the back... powder coated after I have welded them on.
if you have multiple layers you can use the VHB tape, I know of a guy locally who does some fancy paint jobs then drills holes through both layers and uses Chrome BOLTS to hold them together.
This example (only uploaded image I have right now) The Weld Nut is about 5/16" tall, you can get smaller ones from McMaster. Probably overall a bit cheaper than the tape. You can add LEDs or what not between layers if you wish.

thanks for the ideas
I had thought about double sided tape but worried about gravity sliding the piece over time
and the welded nuts I was worried about the nuts on the wall
thanks again for your ideas

Re: Multi layered art work
in my example the weld nut is a tubular nut with a flange for welding what I have there is 1/4-20 with a 3/4" flange I grind down the flange to fit where I need it then tack it in with 3 or 4 good hot tacks.
They are welded to the back of the Facer then corresponding holes in the backer with a Button Head cap screw in it.
I use 18-8 stainless bright screws.
The screws are smooth on the head, so they should not hurt the wall.
I make loops or cut a Key Hole in the backer to hang it.

Any 3M automotive grade double sided tape will be plenty. Think about it, it holds mouldings on cars/trucks for 10-20 years in the weather and car washes....everything. Just try to take one off some time.

Thumbs up to any 3M tape product, but I have also used Black silicone gasket adhesive, which I believe is made by Permatex as well.

Re: Multi layered art work
I've been cutting small holes (.18) in the back piece and welding through the back holes to join them then I mask and paint as needed. All these ideas sound easier though. I might stick to welding for outdoor pieces and tape or glue for interior pieces.
