If you open up your operators manual to the cut charts for mechanized cutting you will find charts for Finecut consumables (below 10 gauge thickness), for 40 amp shielded consumables (below 1/4"), for 60 amp shielded consumables (below 5/8") and 80 amp shielded consumables. I have attached the 60 amp shielded cut chart for reference.

At the top are the exact consumables with part numbers to use. to the left of the chart is material thickness....on the chart you will find pierce delay time, cut height (both physical and arc voltage settings (for height controlled machines) as well as optimal (best cut) and maximum cut speeds. If you use genuine Hypertherm consumables and follow these specs exactly....you will get a very nice cut. There are charts for steel, aluminum and stainless, all of which were developed in Hypertherm's test labs in N.H. USA.

Pierce heights should typically be 2x the cut height (from the chart), except for piercing above 3/8" you should pierce at around .020". On newer Hypertherm systems the pierce heights are also listed for each thickness on these cut charts.

If you don't have the operators manual.....it is available as a free download at www.hypertherm.com . Click on downloads library (top of the page), choose system type (Powermax1250), then manuals, then operators manual, you can download it as a .pdf file.
