Hi everyone,
Im wanting to find out before I buy the powermax45 with mech torch will I be able to operate the the torch on/off with a relay here are the ones I have on my breakout board, The ratings marked on the relays are: 16 amps at 120 VAC, 8 amps at 230 VAC and 10 amps at 30 VDC.
Also i am mostly going to be cutting .125"(mild steel) and thinner can the pm45 be used in a 220v/30amp receptacle if using at 30-35amps would that give a good cut on thinner material or is it best to always cut at 45amps like the charts show.
thks scott

Re: Powermax45 torch control relay
You can operate the Powermax45 with machine torch on your breakout board output relays. The input start circuit uses less than 1 amp. The input amperage draw of a Powermax45 is rated for cutting the maximum production thickness. If you cut thinner materials, even at 45 amps output...the input amperage draw will be less than the data plate indicates. A bit of a guess here, but I suspect you can cut 1/4", maybe 3/8" all day long on a 30 amp 230 volt input power circuit.
There are two sets of consumables for the Powermax45, a 30 amp set and a 45 amp shielded set. As with any plasma, best cut quality is at the nozzle (some call it a tip) design max amperage as this produces the best energy density.
Best regards, Jim Colt Hypertherm

Thks for your reply Jim,
I suppose if the relay is rated at or above whats needed it wont hurt anything?

Re: Powermax45 torch control relay
Correct. All the relay does on your breakout board is to activate the electronic start input on the plasma.....just like flipping a switch.
