I am making truck hitches and license plates and they require multi colors. My next purchase will be a powder coat set up but from what I have read it is hard to do two different colors on the same piece with powder coat. I will have black in most of my items so how would painting the powder hold up? If I were to shoot all the pieces in black fully covered then tape off and scuff a little and shoot rattle can on the places I need to be different colors then spray a clear?
Thanks.

You can purchase high temp tape and tape the areas off that you want a different color, then shoot the other color powder on that.

Are there any bonding issue from the different layers of powder coat?

Re: Painting Powder Coat
A friend of mine located a company that makes a liquid to mix the powder with. Then he brushes it on and bakes it the same as if the powder were applied in the normal fashion.

I have heard of that but never as to what liquid was used????It would seem you need to use one that would evaporate before you go to the oven.

P365 used to sell L2P - or was it P2L?
Liquid to Powder (or Powder 2 Liquid).
I just looked and didn't find it listed.
And yes, it needed to evaporate to leave just the powder. It was best used with an airbrush. Paint brushes would leave brush strokes.

Re: Painting Powder Coat
we have done up to 5 colors on one sign and have never had issues you need to remember when you shoot dormant or neon colors you have to shoot a base of powder chrome then the dormant color and you could shoot a clear on that and never have a problem with the adhesion the problem is the thicker the powder the more vulnerable it is to chipping like traditional liquid paint. yes you can paint over powder we powder harley tanks and entire car bodies as a primer before they do the body work and liquid paint the best paint is one with a perfect adhesion on the primer!
