Question about Powermax 65 for Jim Colt

What's happening is when I try taking the small portion of the torch off, it's getting hung up somewhere, and I'm not sure why. I made a video of it.

if memory serves me right you must disconnect in three places (see pic) and it comes off the other way. you cannot get it off the way you are in the vid.

I can't even get to any of that stuff in the picture, since I can't get the "mini-torch" portion off to get to the stuff behind it.

Per the instructions when I take the 3 screws off the front, the mini torch portion should slide off. Mine is getting hung up.

There is a threaded coupler on the back of the short sleeve (that is held on with three small screws)...this coupler has to be unthreaded and slid back over the lead. Cannot tell from your video if it is there or not as your hands are covering everything I need to see.

I have taken many of these apart....never had an issue. Maybe on of the internal wires is hanging up inside the sleeve? Can you look inside and use a tool to push it out of the way?

Jim Colt, excuse me, but i am still not clear on this. Can I just buy a short machine torch body and wire that to my existing hand torch on a 65? Or do i have to buy a long machine torch ( with cable), and a short machine torch body and convert that?

No, the machine torch will not work on the hand torch lead. The connections are different.

The machine torch and the mini machine torch use the same components....except the long version has a longer mounting sleeve. You can convert any "long" Duramax machine torch into a mini torch by removing the long torch mounting sleeve. The directions are in the operators manual that comes with each torch. Conversion takes about 5 minutes.

Sorry for resurrecting the dead, but it seemed like a suitable thread to add a question about the 65.

Except for ability to cut or pierce thicker material, are the 65 and 85 the same technology and capabilities/cut quality? (as referenced earlier in the thread, I know the 45 is different from these.)

The 65 and 85 use the same torch and consumables...and even share internal power supply components. The only differences are in power output and power consumption. They were designed concurrently by the Hypertherm Light Industrial Design team.

Over 90% of air plasma systems under 85 amps are sold and used strictly for hand cutting, that is why we talk a lot about hand cutting applications. The recommended cut specs and thicknesses are higher for hand cutting as you can manipulate the torch (tilt it for piercing thicker material) and can edge start easier, and, hand cutting usually has more off time. For mechanized use the recommended capacity is usually about 1/2 of the recommended capacity for hand cutting.

Hypertherm is conservative in their ratings. If we say a Powermax65 is rated for 5/8" for cnc mechanized cutting, you can be sure you will be happy with it's performance. Not all manufacturers are as "honest" about their cut capacity ratings.
