Steel Rack

I've had steel in various shapes (sheet, bar, tube etc..) scattered all throughout my disaster of a shop for too long! TOO DARN LONG I SAY!! It's time I built a rack to hold and organize it all. So I did. I built this thing out of 1" square tubing. It holds 18' lengths the vertical way,(I know... why not 20... my roof ain't high enough.) and 12' lengths the horizontal way.

I get most of my steel in 10 and 12 foot lengths anyways so no biggie. I store my solids in the horizontal, and my tubes in the vertical. I also have 3" of space for sheets ranging from 20G to 1/4" which are my most popular thicknesses.

I love it and wish I woulda done it about 3 years ago.... oh well... live and learn.

Whew!! I don't feel quite so bad about my shop now. Mine is still messier though. I was starting to get some kind of complex....seeing all these spotless shops.....thanks, Scratch for the pictures....nice racks.

I need to do the same thing.
I found that I don't trash anything, even short cut lengths and scraps.
I end up using them on something.

I have sets of saw horses in my shop with all my tubing stacked.
It's a pain when it all falls over and crashes!

I have been finding huge rattlesnakes in my shop and I have to keep everything off the floor so I can spot a surprise.

Yesterday I was was welding scenes in a gate for a customer when I spotted a 5 footer buzzing and ready to strike!
I was on the floor welding and had to get up to cut another scene and it was in the corner of my shop by the clothes dryer.

I had been hearing this one for a week in my shop but every time I went to look for it, it would hide.

Last month I had to fix some PVC pipes and reached into a box of fittings and there was one in the fitting box, Surprise!

I too think it's time to build a rack.

I need mine to be mobile (wheels), so I can bring farm vehicles in my shop and do repairs and maintenance work to them when they need it (always something needing work).

I figure I could build one for tubing and one for sheet and plate.

Again for me it is important to have a clear floor, I work in my shop a lot at night and after working all day the last thing you want to do is look around with tired eyes trying to spot a fang monster.

Your rack is very nice and I like how your tubing stands up. Keeps you from catching your legs on tube ends.

That's a nice rack Scratch. I built a much smaller one on wheels for my garage. I keep all of my sheet and plate on one side and lengths on the other. It is nothing fancy, but maybe I will post a couple of pictures in the future. I was enjoying the post, but my mind went numb at rattlesnake. Just reading elkriver's story gave me the heebie-jeebies.

Well I hope someone tells me I have a nice rack one day My shop is almost completed... I will be uploaded pics soon.. Nothing like having a toy (plasma) staring you in the face for 5 months and not being able to play with it... Just watch out boys.. my shop has painted trim and everything! No rattlesnakes though.. although my husband is starting to act like a crabby old rattlesnake because all of my building is giving him a complex..

Anyway, I do like your rack... makes a great spot for all those rods

Here is my rack. Pieces shorter than 5' on the bottom. Up to 24' on the top. Material slides through door on right onto rollers for band saw or double chop saw table. Everything in my shop is on rollers except my plasma table.

So you have two chop saws setup all the time... one for 90's and one for 45's!

You would not believe how much time i save with the 2 chopsaw setup. The rollers are 39" of the floor. No more aeching back from bending over all the time. No adjusting, the angle plates are welded in place. Ialso have another for those odd angles. i just lift the 45 saw off table put in on shelf underneath ad set the othe saw on the table. It saves alot of hassle always changing the degree on the same saw.

and Elkriver, the lone star beer sign is permanent. I do my best work in the evenings with a cold one when the wife and kids are out of the way.

Everybody's gotta start somewhere Fatz... I've had my 5X10 table in my garage for a while when I first got it too. I even saw a link somewhere (on here I think) that had a guy with a CNC plasma table "inside" his home!
