Re: Corel Draw 5
Got mine off Ebay for a price which will make everyone hate me, so I'm not saying how much
I took a risk thinking it might not be legit and would not register but everything is fine. Had it for a couple of years now.
I've actually spent more on training books and DVDs than I have on the software, but I'm completely OK with that. Software it just a bunch of bits and bytes until you learn to make it sing.
Keith.

Re: Corel Draw 5
Check your local Tech School or Community College. They usually sell software at low cost to students. All you have to do is have a student purchase it for you. Full blown Autocad student price is around $250.

Re: Corel Draw 5
5 should be relatively cheap right now. I bought X6 almost 10 months ago so 5 is an older version. Think I paid $140 as an upgrade from X3 direct from Corel. Not too much changed though and I skipped X4 and X5 altogether.

Check out any limitations on student editions of software.
According to this thread http://www.plasmaspider.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=9391 for instance, you can't import dxf files.
Wonder what other limitations it has.

Re: Corel Draw 5
Thanks for all the help. Heres another question.I have Coreldraw x3 complete with a full manual. Will I be enough ahead with version 5 or 6 to even bother with it? I am slowly getting more done with it and I can see that it probably will do all I need and then some.My head is swimming with having set up my table, learning Sheetcam and Mach etc. It is over 50 years since I left school.I also have had Alibre Design Cad for many years now which gave me a head start on things. Thanks again.

Re: Corel Draw 5
x3 will only export later dxf with splines
x5 restored ability to export older dxf without splines, it has the join-nodes tool, and the contour command is better with fillet and chamfer options, plus some minor improvements
so x5 is a good upgrade
x6 not so much, it doesn't have any major improvements over x5, about all it did was add the option to run 64 bit

After reading your post I tried it and the student version of X6 imports DXF files without any problem.beefy wrote:Check out any limitations on student editions of software.

As far as I know, the only difference between student and retail versions is that student editions are not licensed for commercial use, and cannot be upgraded.

Re: Corel Draw 5
Good to know.
The guy that wrote about that "problem" must have had a bad dxf or something and it wouldn't import.

Check Amazon. I bought the full version of X5 in an open box version. All it came with was the disk, but really that's all you need.

Don't buy the download version because you miss out on a lot of the extra free goodies.
Get the disc and then you get about a gigabyte of fonts, graphics, etc. I think there's about 1000 fonts.

Re: Corel Draw 5
Hay all, just getting started at all this artsy stuff. I have corel 10 and adobe 11( don't have a clue what to do with them HA!) and just purchased Gary's super bundle "THANKS", any way to many questions to ask. I've been trying to read all the post's i can. And try do decide what to start out learning. CD or AI , and should i upgrade either they were of course free. I'm sure theirs about a hundred people on here that have had this dilemma. I don't mind spending some cash if it needs to be spent, also would the DXFTOOL be a wise purchase.
Any and ALL advice would be very much appricated
THANKS Danny

Re: Corel Draw 5
Hi Danny,
I use Coreldraw X5. I've had no experience with Illustrator but have heard it's harder to learn but much more stable than Coreldraw. Quite a few people have experienced the odd crashes you sometimes get with Coreldraw. Saying that a heck of a lot of people seem to use it and it's the main drawing tool in their business, so the crashing bit can't be that much of a problem. I think Illustrator is quite a bit more expensive too but check that out.
I certainly recommend DXFTOOL. I could have started using the free Inkscape but one of the reasons I went with Coreldraw was because of the DXFTOOL plugin. I believe Coreldraw exports DXFs with splines, whereas the DXFTOOL exports DXFs with arcs. I use Sheetcam which can't deal with splines in DXFs so often the DXF import ends up all wonky, but no problems when I use the DXFTOOL to export. Another benefit is you get a huge reduction in nodes and hence file size.
As far as the licensing of the DXFTOOL goes I found out recently that it can be transferred to another computer. I'd always thought it was locked to the computer it was on and if you got a new computer you'd have to buy DXFTOOL again. However on this thread I started on the Coreldraw forum https://coreldraw.com/forums/t/38260.aspx James Leonard the DXFTOOL author stated that he allows it to be transferred.

like I said I've got access to corel 10 but would it be worth the money to up grade. and is x5 plenty
Thanks Again

Re: Corel Draw 5
I'm guessing you might not get an upgrade price for Corel X5 (look into it though) because it's "too far" from v10, so if that's the case you'll have to pay full price.
But anyway I'd go for X6 which has a few new features over X5.
You make me feel good that I didn't try to save money and go with Inkscape LOL.
Keith.
