Home Made Air Dryer Idea

Post by Complete_Loser »

This Air Dryer forum doesnt have an option for "New Topic" so i will just post here for now.

I have an idea for an air dryer. But not sure if it will work.
I was thinking of getting an A/C window unit and plumbing my copper airline into its cooling radiator. And down stream have an auto water blow off valve.

This would be much cheaper than me buying a refer air dryer, yet would be the same concept (i think).
You want it done cheap and fast, it wont be right.

Too much plumbing and provisions for venting the hot exhaust.

Small refrigerators are cheap - dormroom size.
Run your air into a spool of copper tubing inside the unit. All it would take is a couple of quick-disconnects running to the outside of the unit and a long coil of tubing. Put a water seperator at the outlet and plug it in.

One idea I found...........pretty nice actually, as long as you don't mind buying ice.....could act as a beer cooler simultaneously....

Yes, this concept works!!!!!!!!!!! Check out my post titled cheap homebrew air dryer. The copper tubing is more eficient than the plastic line I used but, the plastic seems to work fine. I have not had a drop of water in my lines since installing it. I used the plastic because I already had a bunch of it lying around and i was looking to prove the concept on the cheap.

As for the air conditioner idea, it would use alot more power and be harder to fabricate than using a fridge.

How much copper tubing would you need to put in the frig for it to work. Where I work we coil bundle for small hot water heaters. I could get a pretty big copper coil drill some holes the frig and pipe it up and be all set to go.

Would i need to put a filter on the airline to help out.

I think it works best if the coils were looped horizontally instead of vertically, like itsnotlevel has shown. I've seen quite a few built with the loops at 90 degrees to his.

With the verticle, moisture is being trapped at the bottom of each loop. With a top-down horizontal design, the moisture would all drain down by gravity.

Just a suggestion.
