How much to charge for design?

How do people charge for designing something: hourly, cut time??

For me it depends on thickness of material as a beginning point. On gauge material I double the material cost, charge 20 cents per inch unfinished. On top of that, I
charge 10 cents per pierce. That is a basic start, and I find that I am fairly competitive.
When the part becomes real intricate I begin to add some shop time @ 65.00 per hour. Design time, I use the same figure.
Sometimes I have to see if it is worth my while to charge a fair market value....in other words...would I pay that for it?
Your location, the clientele, the amount of detail...you will win some and lose some....and you will work out your own system.
Charge a fair, reasonable price and don't "give the farm away" and you will do well.
Learn to say no.

There was a thread on this topic about 2 months ago or so... can't remember the name of it but it got about 15 responses or so. A good thread to read. I'll let you try to search for it since I'm a little tired and lazy right now. Maybe one of the other members remembers what the name of it is or have the ambition to search for it.

Here is a spreadsheet that you can try. It will allow you to figure by material cost, sq in, sq ft do the taxes (make tacos?), figure in markup etc..
I think it is easy to use (but what author doesn't think his is easy?)
