Fine cut question -Plasmamax 85

Post by acm329 »

Hey Jim I recently purchased the fine cut kit for my new Powermax 85 I went buy the book specs and it wouldn't cut14 ga. I have been running 65amp parts because that's all my supplier had. They cut great. I was looking through the book and noticed i may need ad different retaing cap . What is the ohmic sensing one and do I need it

The ohmic retaining cap fits all the same consumables that the standard retaining cap does...and they cut exactly the same. The ohmic cap has a wire tab connector for use with height control systems that use ohmic plate contact for finding the surface of the plate. If I knew the make and model of your machine and height control...then I could answer your question!

9 out of 10 times when I hear that the Fine Cut parts do not cut correctly at book specs....I discover that the torch to work distance was incorrect. Torch height is far more critical with FineCut parts than it is with the rest of the consumables. A little too high and the torch will not cut fully through the material. I will stand behind the book specs for the FineCut parts.....when I have used them on many different cnc machines...they always work very well!

For the Powermax65 and 85...here are the part numbers and book specs for FineCut parts on 14 ga. steel:

Shield: 220948
Retaining Cap: 220854 (220953 if your height control uses ohmic contact plate sensing)
Nozzle: 22093
Electrode: 220842
Swirl Ring: 220857

14 ga mild steel cut specs:

Amperage: 45
Torch cut height: .06"
Pierce height: .15"
Pierce delay time: .4 seconds
Recommended cut speed: 220 inches per minute
Arc voltage: 82 volts....start at this voltage then adjust voltage setting on your height control to maintain the .06" cut height. Many arc voltage controls are calibrated differently...the physical cut height is what we are trying to achieve.
