I sold my plasmacutter with a cnc table today and need to buy another plasma cutter on Monday. I just sold the powermax 45 and really liked it. Im going to buy either a powermax 45 or a powermax 65. I mostly cut 3/16 with the occasional 3/8 job but mostly 3/16 and a fair bit of 14 and even 16 gauge. And everything in between. So with the powermax 65 I understand it has 45 amp consumables for fine cutting... do those consumables produce the same kerf width as the powermax 45 consumables? I want the extra horse power for the heavier stuff but dont want detail in art to suffer too much. Thank you.

Re: powermax 65
The 45 amp shielded consumables as used in the Powermax 65 cut identically to the 45 amps shielded consumables used in the Powermax45. The 65 also can use Hypertherm's FineCut consumables that operate at 45 amps and less....for cutting 1/8 inch and thinner with the best edge quality.
So...the newer 65 and 85 systems have much more cutting capability at the high power end....as well as enhanced thinner plate cutting as compared to the Powermax45.

I am also in the market for a plasma. Is the 85 capable of the same cutting quality on thinner material as the 45?
Thanks

Re: powermax 65
Thanks alot Jim. You've swayed me to the powermax 65. What are the correct consumables I should use with it on a Sampson cut table using the hand torch? Ill use the 45 amp fine cuts and Ill get some of the regular consumables for heavier cutting. I ask because you are the plasma master and people here in the welding supply stores will often tell me different than what you say for needed consumables so Id rather get if from the horses mouth and know Im purchasing the correct items.
Thanks alot.

Re: powermax 65
I run the PM 65 and it has great cut quality. I run the fine cut consumables all the time when cutting 14ga and smaller. Just follow the settings in the manual and you will have no problems.

Re: powermax 65
The Powermax 65 and 85 use the exact same torch and consumables.....except that the 85 can also use an 85 amp set of consumables. Cut quality. consumable life and thin material cutting are identical. These two systems were developed concurrently and share a lot of internal components as well.
They both use the FineCut consumables for thin materials.....which are not available for the Powermax45.
