ComMarker B6 Galvo MOPA Fiber Laser

Post by tnbndr »

I purchased one of these about a month ago and out of the box the autofocus did not work and sounded grumbly. Cutting did not sound like it should and laser beam never looked bright. ComMarker sent me parts, for me to replace to try to rectify the situation. After spending hours swapping parts in a small cabinet and reassembly the problem was actually worse. Contacted ComMarker, they responded quickly and said they would send a new unit.
They sent me a return shipping label and once packaged and shipped with photos sent, they said new unit would be shipped. They actually waited until the old unit arrived before shipping. Turn around time was quick though as they have a fulfillment center in New Jersey.
The replacement is set up and running and everything seems to be working good. I am back to being pleased with my investment.

Dennis - that's a nice looking setup! Is the ducting for cooling air or? Some very nice looking parts as well.
Are you only doing hobby stuff, or do you intend to try to make some money with your new machine?

Thanks,
David

The ducting is for exhaust of noxious fumes. I just have it blowing up into my exhaust from when I used to paint metal art down there. The 4" fan blows into the hood which is hooked up to an 8" inline fan that exhausts out to my back lot.
I intend to make a little coin off of the laser once I feel I am dialed in on certain things.
I intend to mark shotgun choke tubes, which I have practiced a little bit on.
Dialing in settings is the trick and with the fiber laser you have 4 settings to adjust so options are endless.

These are some old steel chokes that I marked with black annealing:

Most of those look great! A few problems on several of them I see. Are these mounted on a rotary for the engraving? Is there a market for marking chokes? I'm surprised they are not marked from the manufacturer.

I have to give ComMarker credit for quick responses. Although I just wanted an exchange right away they insisted I try the swap out first. That was a nightmare. Below are some pics of the space I had to work in. Also their video did not match my machine so I figured things out on the fly.
The board they had me replace had all the connections hot glued together. And the new board the plugs were opposite the original locations so I had to finesse and twist wiring harnesses .

Original board, note green wiring plugs location

David, yes, those pieces are all practice with settings etc. I understand the relationship between Power and Speed from the plasma world but now with the fiber laser I have Frequency and Q pulse thrown in. Four parameters to play with creates many testing scenarios.
If you have any tips, tricks, suggestions etc. I am all ears.
The chokes tube market is not a great opportunity for making money. More to offer a convenience to shooters who know and care. I shoot shotguns competitively so I am familiar with wants/needs. The larger manufacturers do mark their chokes but like the ones I show in the photo, that was a small local guy with a machine shop that created his own chokes. He marked them with a small sticker whick when exposed repetedly to solvents etc you can imagine what happened. Those chokes as they were, unmarked, were junk. As they are now I should be able to sell them.
Some manufacturers mark with colors which creates a memory game. I can etch the actual constriction on the choke.
I do not plan on getting rich with this laser, not by any means. I'd be happy to sell enough to just offset the original cost of the machine and have some fun along the way.
Working on some Slate settings currently. Wish me luck, I'm getting there. Wisconsin is a big drinking state, everyone has a bar in their basement or man cave. Customized slate coasters should be marketable. If not, oh well.

With a rotary attachment it was $4500. That is a 60W. You can also get it in a 20W or 30W for less money.
Shipped from a fulfillment center in New Jersey, no shipping or tax.

David:
I purchased a rotary with the laser but have not used it as of yet. The chokes I simply did one line at a time and the small curvature did not affect the etching. There is even a curvature correction in Lightburn but I didn't even use that!
The rotary will be a future project after an upcoming road trip.
