I did not have a plasma cutter. But I guess I even could have made slots with a file.
Back in the day B.P. (Before Plasma) there was a bunch of hole drilling, grinding and filing. A custom alternator bracket was an all day adventure. Now a few minutes of layout and a couple minutes of cut time.
Here is a pantograph I built 16 years ago and used to cut brackets for street rod projects, talk about rubbing 2 sticks together.
I machined the torch head to use a standard tip and a solenoid to trigger the oxygen. Even got posted in "Home Shop Machinist" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdhEtUS ... rtjester90

When I was doing
An apprenticeship for toolmaker.
The first three month was just working with a file.
As I got better I had to file a Square Peace about 20x 20
Tolerance 0.02mm and it had to be perfectly square.
If it is not perfect they give you a new peace and you repeat. Once you get it right you get a metal plate 60x 60 x 15 mm now you drill a hole 15 mm after you file the hole to be a square where the other peace fits in and there must be no play.
Once you perfectly have control you were allowed to cut threads by hand a whole pallet of small plates perhaps 100 threads after this we were allowed to work on an an old lathe.
