DIY table

Post by Triple S »

So I asked a question a few years ago and I’ve gotten sidetracked and have not had time to build my table, but I originally posted that I was going to build a 5 x 10 Percision plasma table and I bought all the material to build it. I just wanna know now that it’s been a couple years. Is that still a good, DIY table To build and is anybody cutting parts for that gantry? I’m sure software ideas have changed just looking for some guidance and a direction to go as I am going to build a table but need some ideas . I know Ron is not involved anymore, and I was trying to buy the magnum parts from his nephew at the time, but never received any reply. That’s why I never ended up with the gantry parts.

It looks like they are now geared more towards cnc wood routing - in fact I don't see any mention of plasma cutting at their new site. But - I don't see any reason why these parts could not be used for building a cnc plasma table as well. I expect that both Toms may chime in here later today with more information and suggestions for you.

Well, thank you on his site cutting edge plasma. They do show the PDF plan still for everything. I originally downloaded from Ron or that he sent me back in the day so all the plans are still available.

There is lots of great info in the videos, depending on you budget there are other controller setup you can use. I have built several tables (and sold) using different controller software and electronics The Myplasma has been used by many and they are happy. My last table (the one I use and kept) uses LinuxCNC software with a controller card that works with that. The software is free and the card is fair priced with lots of inputs and outputs. A THC is also incorporated in the software with a small add on card ($70) sold by the controller card manufacture.
Personally I do not care for ball screw drive for long distance assemblies or dual motor for an axis I do use dual drive for an axis but with a cross shaft setup. I an not alone with this concept, there are other DIY builder on this site too. Do the research as to concept and availably of electronics and other components as you are doing with this post. :Like :Like

Thank you very much for the info and I will keep checking. I have a hyper therm 65 and fabrication is not my issue so whatever software would be better to use I am on board with that cost is always an issue, but I’ve always been one with the idea. That if you try to go cheap, it will come back to bite you. I would rather put the money out for the Better set up and be done with it but thank you very much. Any info would be great.

Is the consensus that the 5x10 by table from Percision plasma that Ron put together is a good set up and the magnum gantry

Even though I have the material for the table and gantry, I would have no issues and changing it up as I’m sure I can find other things to use material on if needed

I have a 6x12 with a precision plasma magnum gantry. I've had zero mechanical issues with it. It's paired with linuxcnc qtplasmac electronics and I can't tell the difference in cut quality between it and my Hornet table that uses hypertherm software, ac servos, big linear bearings etc.

It just cuts and has been maintenance free. I've never had any issues with the gear reductions slipping.

Gantry's are easy to build, if your strapped for time buy the 80/20 material if your strapped for money use thin wall steel tubing:

Buggy's are optional but help with acceleration :Yay

Did Precision Plasma LLC originally offer a diy set of plans for this gantry - showing all of the dimensions for the various brackets?
Thanks,
David

OK. Thanks! It looks like these drawings were to be used for assembly purposes for the gantry kit (if they offered one). Otherwise they are good for reference for someone designing their own gantry using a similar setup.

I have an older PPLC rail kit. It has worked well without any mechanical issues. If I was to do it again I would source my parts out from many of the posts here, ex 80/20.
