house

Post by 4130metalworks »

Hi, i would like a bit of advice or even pictures of similar houses people have drawn to cut with their plasma. Artistic work isn't my forte and the amount of lines from the siding and rails on the house are looking very busy and ugly when i try. This is going onto a welcome sign for my friends farm.

Thank you in advance

It is not a very good photo to work with. The left side of the home is cut off. It can be drawn in, but the whole image is too busy for anything nice. Perhaps a photo of the home from the front might look better.

Beyond that, you can draw a vector file for a sign, but you have to rely on the human brain to fill in the blanks. You don't draw every line. you draw a few, and let the brain IMPLY that the others exist.

Thank you rokcrawler and Joe, the hardest part is figuring out what details to leave or remove. I wasn’t looking for a perfect representation of the house, more the idea

What i have drawn so far has too much detail and will look like confetti. My thoughts were to draw partial lines for the slats and sidings with only the plasma kerf width

I will do some googling for other houses

Post up what you have so far and we can take a look and offer suggestions.
I too struggle with how much detail to add or omit, but in the end, its usually what looks good.

this is my try, i am definitely in awe of those who do plasma art everyday. The house won't be that big once cut, around 200x200mm

That's pretty darn good, def needs work to make it plasma cut friendly but pretty darn good no doubt.

You are making great progress! I would just trim back the horizontal lines so they are not touching the sides of the house, and then close in the lower portion of the house so you have a closed path for the outer perimeter of the house.

I bought this file off etsy as it has everything needed and was personalising the file for my friends farm. Drawing the whole thing from scratch just wasn't working, mechanical parts are more up my wheelhouse. Also I don't mind supporting other small businesses.

Thanks for all the tips adbunch, they ar much appreciated
My thoughts for doing single lines instead of rectangles was the size might overcut. The house won't be that large, total sign width is 500mm max

I am using a combination of emachineshop while learning inkscape for some parts. There are too many lines for emachineshop and it freezes

That looks like a great deal for only $15! Plus you tell them what you want for the text and they do it for you so your file will be ready to cut.
I will look forward to seeing how your finished sign turns out.

By the way, I do like the desktop version of eMachineShop much better than the online version. It is free to install and use - it's an older version - but it works great for what it is.

The photo he posted above is from the Etsy listing. I don't think he has cut his version yet.

I have progressed some on the file but am now stuck and need help. There must be too many lines or nodes as it keeps getting stuck or non responsive. If you zoom in on parts like the grass they are all broken up lines, could this be causing the issue?
The text and such needs to be changed, a few lines added or intersected etc to make this a cuttable file and its getting very frustrating with inkscape getting stuck or crashing.

should I do a trace and go from there? Reduce the line size? Any help would be appreciated

ps, please don't copy and sell the file. The original and ready to cut piece is available cheaply on etsy from kismetcutreadydxf

It is not ready to cut yet. Too many islands, and incomplete closed paths.

Is this the file they sent you before you edited to add your house? If so - the file you purchased has lots of problems as is. Please send me a PM with the original file and I will take a look and show you how to use Inkscape to customize it to your requirements. Also - if you are planning to cut this as a single layer, the name will need to be connected to the main part.

thanks for the response, mine altered version is what I needed help with Joe. The original version is ready to cut and I didn't want to publicly post it.
Mine has many changes, pretty much everything has something personalised

Thanks for the offer David, I'll send you a pm now

Here is a comparison between the original and yours. It would be much easier to start with the original and edit to meet your requirements. Also - the font you chose will be problematic for cutting. I would go with something easier to work with.

Guy - I have responded to your PM with a few questions. I will check back later this evening. The problem with your modified file was that it had too many nodes - I suspect as a result of your editing - and Inkscape shut down for me also. I finally did get it to export as dxf before it shut down - so I was able to open it with Design Edge and smooth and link/join and export as dxf for import back into Inkscape.

So now I have both files open in the same program - so it will make it easier to work with them.

Thanks,
David

Hi Guy,
I was able to work with the file you had already edited and get it to a point where it may work for you. The reason your edited file was freezing up in Inkscape was that it had a node count of around 70,000. The original file you started with from Etsy had around 15,000 nodes - as I recall. I was able to open your edited file with CorelDraw and export as dxf which I opened with Design Edge and smoothed it to reduce the total node count back down to around 15,000. I did most of the editing using Design Edge (faster for me), but created the text using Inkscape and imported to Design Edge to incorporate into your design.

I don't know what overall size you were planning on, but I had to scale it up to 36" wide to make it so all of the smaller details would cut.

Here are some screen shots.

Although I used Design Edge for most of the edit of Guy's sign, he was interested to learn how to do this editing using Inkscape. I have created a new post in the Inkscape section of this forum showing how to do it. I also created a Google slide show with the screen shots - link below.
