I would lay your part on a piece of white paper, trace around it with a Sharpie or thin line Sharpie, and scan it in. For larger parts, you could break the paper trace into sections - scan them in, and then put them back together with the software (Design Edge or Inkscape).
It is also possible to place a part directly onto the scanner for a scan, but I would personally prefer not to risk scratching the surface of the scanner.
