Thats exactly what I did. I In the one image I taped it straight to the torch and turned off the torch height controller and all the stuff. Also - to add to what Tom has said - it is often times helpful to use a sharpie pen holder in place of the torch and simply draw your circles and squares instead of cutting them. This will give the same feedback, but without wasting the valuable material. That's what I did when I was getting started with my plasma table, and I have done the same with my cnc router tables when I was getting them dialed in.

I am happy I only wasted a little bit of material thankfully. The one thing I have noticed is the wavey lines wont show like obviously plasma will in a cut wall of the material. Either way the thing is cutting some very very precise holes now and all shafts are pinned and not going anywhere thankfully.
