IPT60 Plasma torch quality issues????

Post by Tristar500 »

I purchased a Primeweld Cut 60 a few months back and then started a CNC machine.

I found a machine torch on ebay (see link) https://www.ebay.com/itm/325629318156

Is this even an IPT torch or a knockoff, of a knockoff of a Chinese torch?

I'm still sorting out some serious THC problems (new THC on the way) so final call on cut quality will come soon.

In the interim, I decided to try a tackle a small easy job on 1/4 steel plate.
I got it pretty level and ran the machine with less than desirable results.

I still own a 20+ year old Hypertherm (Powermmax 350). Consumables are discontinued for that model, I've heard that Hypertherm is the leader in plasma tech and makes consumables for many of the tops of the line machines.

Apart from acquiring a new expensive Hypertherm unit what are my choices here?

Can a Hypertherm or other good quality torch be fitted to the PrimeWeld cut 60?
Any other ideas?

Thanks guys!!

Are you able to show images of the results (I got it pretty level and ran the machine with less than desirable results.). You still may have other issues that need work. I can only give you info on my experiences. I started with my first table using a Everlast Tig/plasma unit hand torch. Was able to get good results. Sold the table to a guy running a Fab shop he used the same unit (his same unit) I moved onto another brand of plasma unit (cannot remember right now) again plasma only, I did adapt a cheap machine torch to it. Both were HF start and I did use a Proma 150, worked fine until it died. After selling that table I moved onto Hypertherm. With all this what I am saying you may have another problem your not seeing. There are many DIY types using different Plasma units and they are happy. Understand I am not poking at you just saying, lets talk about what is going on with your setup. Looking at members here there are many different combination of plasma, software, and electronics. I don't have all the answers but like many here I am willing to help. Where are you located???

Here's a pic of front and back of piece I cut.

Pretty nasty id day.

Going to put the hand torch back on the Primeweld cut 60 and see what I get.

I'm still in the window to return the ebay unit.

LOL, knockoff of a chinese knockoff...maybe but likley not. Looks like an IPT60 to me.

The IPT 60 machine torch and the hand torch as far as I know are identical in terms of the inner workings and consumables with the difference being the outer casing. For this reason I don't expect you will see any difference between using the two. If I was to choose one to use I would use the machine torch since they are much easier to mount solidly to keep from jiggling around.

As for your cut quality, yes it looks crappy but I would not blame it all on the plasma cutter, it looks like you have some slop in your machine movement and if you were to get that fixed up I believe you would see significant positive results and I am sure at that point we could work on fine tuning the plasma and achieve some nice cuts with what you have.
