Will a powermax 85 run fine on 220 power?

Post by Ronniehotdog »

I'm looking to buy a powermax 85. A friend said he thought it wouldn't run well on 220 power.

Any help would be great.

If you look in the manual it shows how to wire them up for 220 VAC single phase, But the unit needs to be setup for that from the factory.
meaning if you buy a 3 phase unit you cannot wire it for single IMHO I have bought 3 PM 65s and used them in my home shop no problem.

The CSA version of the 65 or 85 can be ran on single or three phase, I have the 1250 the predecessor to the 85 it along with the 85 is the largest torch that can be ran on single or 3 ph. I also have a 65 running on 240v/3ph and a 105 that is 3 ph only, the 125 requires a 480 / 3 ph minimum power supply. Running the unit on 3 ph keeps the power meter from becoming a gyro.. :HaHa :HaHa

Go here and download the manual for the unit (save it to your hard drive for future use and access to cut charts):

https://www.hypertherm.com/en-US/resour ... POWERMAX85

Power requirements on pg 38

So if you have a 220/240 ( I have 2 legs of 123v most days) power service that will handle a 100 amp breaker yes you can run it on single ph power

I have a Powermax 85 on my Plasmacam table, and although I am running it on 3 phase from a 30 hp rotary phase converter, it will run on single phase 240Vac but needs to be on about an 100 amp dedicated circuit. Since I have my other cnc machines running from 3 phase anyway, it was just easier for me to go the 3 phase route.

It’l run just as good on 1 as it does on 3 phase so long as the NEMA plate says so. Make sure you’ve got some good thick wire running to it though.

Just finished running 2gauge tw90 out to my shop after running off 6 gauge for a bit.

When all I had was the 6gauge I needed to shut off my heater, compressor and everything else before starting to cut or I’d trip a breaker.
