Help turning picture into a cut file

Post by B2 breaker »

My mom asked me to make a sign for one of her friends. He has a 1947 Dodge rat rod truck. I tried scanning pictures of his truck with Inkscape but I'm unsure how to go about cleaning it up to be able to cut. I have a Premier plasma table, trying to draw the sign in inkscape.

Are you looking for the front view or side view? In either case, these do not really lend themselves to auto trace - so the easiest and most efficient method (in my opinion) would to manually trace using the Bezier tool. I like to start by doing the outer perimeter, then the windows and wheels, followed by the other details. Also the higher the resolution of your image (scan from photo) the easier it will be to manually trace.

Either view as long as it's his truck. I haven't tried the manual trace thing yet, I'll mess with that a bit. Thank you

truck trace 1.jpg
Also it would be best to have a photo showing the entire truck, as your side view has the front portion missing.

The front view would probably be easier to work with, as it only has a small portion of the front fenders/bumper missing and we can probably fudge that in to the drawing.

Plasma cutting requires a bit of Real Estate to make a good sign. What size do you want this plaque to be? I suggest a width of no less than 24 inches. However, it can be made smaller, by sacrificing some detail. That is something I can easily draw for you. What is your deadline to receive the file?

What I'd like to do is make a sign that says " Mikey's Garage" with the truck in the middle. I was thinking overall size of the sign being 24-30"

Ahh! I didn't see the text request. You can probably change that yourself.

I like it! How did you do it? Did you manually trace the truck?

Yes. I used DesignEdge software and the drawing tools.

Please CHECK the file for islands, and paths that need to be shortened a bit so parts do not separate where they should remain together, before you cut it.

I looked at it again this morning, and corrected a few small errors. Here is the replacement file.

Personally speaking that front view is too sweet not to draw.

THAT my friend is not true. I've seen your work. You could draw a fabulous multi-layer piece using Inkscape in your sleep.
