Question for Jim Colt - Drag tip cut height
Hi ,Im running a 4x8 table wih a powermax 45 . If the shielded consumable is a 'drag tip ' , which the book calls for a .060 torch height , then should the d.r.o be zeroed with the tip just touching the metal , then raised up to .060 ? I was told to run a unshielded on my plasama cnc machine at .080 because it is better for cnc ? I guess the confusion is a drag tip ,which I asume touches the metal , so do you still need to raise up to .060 ? Which is best for cnc cutting ? Thanks !

Re: Question for Jim Colt
I'm not Jim, but I'll answer anyway:
The drag shield has the correct .06 cut height built in while touching the plate, so it's perfect for cutting with a hand torch. For machine use, you'll need to use the shield intended for the machine torch....it's a direct fit on the hand torch, and uses the same nozzles and retaining ring. It's essentially the same thing minus the protruding parts that you drag.
You should get better life out of the shielded parts than unshielded, since it's better protected from blowback and arcing due to accidentally dragging on your workpiece.

Re: Question for Jim Colt
Thanks for answering I Lean!
The drag shield is at the correct cutting height when dragging.....the machine shield is at the correct height when operating at the height listed in the Hypertherm operators manual. These specs were developed by the Hypertherm engineers that develop the torches and consumables....and should be followed for best performance.
Hypertherm has hand cutting shields as well as machine cutting shields listed in the operators manuals. You can use either shield on either a hand or a machine torch.
