Not so much conversion help but how do you do it help.
Ok here's an issue I've run into several times.
Making a fairly simple set of address signs.
I make them two ways, one it's all a cut out the steel is the border
2nd way is the letters are just connected at the bottom with a small border.
I like the 2nd way for certain signs because it really stands out.
The problem is if a letter is below like a "g" for example.
I can address this problem one of two ways, one is all caps which I dont like.
2nd is make this as a cut out and not the more pronounced method.
I havent come up with something I think looks great for when the letters are basically stand alone.
Have you guys been able to solve this puzzle??
This is just a draft, no bridging yet and letters need cleaned up.
Thoughts??

With Inkscape there is a procedure called linked offset which you can place a border around each letter that will connect them.
here are some tutorials on how to do it
A little different way to do it.

AC's solution is pretty cool and as usual I learned something from his reply
It looks like the font you are using is pretty much a script style font without the letters being connected. Why not use a similar script font that connects each letter together?
Corel Draw substituted the font when I opened your design so maybe I am way off but this is what I saw when I opened your DXF

Re: Not so much conversion help but how do you do it help.
I probably didnt explain very well what my issue is.
I can offset with a few ways in the programs I have, what I'm looking for a solution with is if the font has a letter that hangs below the others.
Example: In the drawing I posted was Trego's.
The lower case "g" hangs below the line of the items I want to connect.

I was thinking that a script font with the letters connected would eliminate the need for the bar at the bottom however if you are stuck on using a bottom bar I am unsure how to make that look good with the low hanging letters.

Yes I'm using the bottom bar to weld to these garden hooks I've been making.
This one is sort of a hybrid, the ones I'm making now are just last names etc...

Ah, I see, very cool. I have seen some members here have cut the low hanging portion of the letter out of the bar which doesn't look too bad. See image below that I whipped up.

Yes, its the only good solution I've ever been able to come up with, I just keep thinking there has to be another great way LOL...
I've also bridged them higher before so the lowest part of the g is the link and every other letter has a raised bridge and then painted a different color.
It works sometimes but in this case it doesnt look great.
Thanks guys much appreciated.

How about something like this. attached the lettering on top like before and the bar under.

Hmmnnnn,... Yes that would work too..
Using it as a true script..
It's always interesting, unless you use simple block letters every job is unique..

When you add a customer to the mix it changes and slows down the project so they can look things over.
As a side note if you use Inkscape and use the cursor to move the letters you can jocky the letters up and down or left and right by using the Alt key with the 4 arrow. The cursor is placed before the letter you want to move, but it will also move all letters after that. Then you go to the next letter to change and move it where you want. This works well with script letters.

Re: Not so much conversion help but how do you do it help.
Thanks for the help. Never many wrong ways just better or more interesting ways. We could post an idea here have 100 people respond 60 would be very similar ideas and we'd have 40 that would put their spin on it.
Robin Hill, the one I didn't think of was the open border in the center, interesting spin..
It drives me nuts sometimes, I'll do some work several different ways and spend a pile of time trying to decide how I want it LOL.. I guess thats what makes it fun.
Thanks for the insight on how you guys do stuff. It's always a pleasure
